Tarbeasts aren't born in the traditional sense. Instead they emerge as full grown adults from a primordial ooze known as the Prime Pit. As such, the Pit is the center of their culture, second only to their god, creator, and leader Gnurf, who has a giant statue of himself front and center of the pit so it's the first thing every newly emerged tarbeast sees. It's also his altar, where their alphabet is inscribed, and the other tarbeasts leave him gems and various trinkets as offerings.

However, the other tarbeasts think a giant testament to yourself is rather tacky, so they don't treat it with nearly as much reverence as he'd like them too, and more often than not, the base of the statue gets frequently vandalized by anyone bored enough to want to carve various things into it.
