A family of Chinese siblings that are the basis for a web comic idea I'm researching for. Huojin is the main character.
This is a rough idea of the premise:
Hi, the name's Huojin Cheung. I'm a second year student at the University of Hong Kong. I'm studying Chinese medicine at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.
I'm currently living at University Hall on campus, but I grew up in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. Some folks ask me why I have a Mandarin first name since my last name is the Cantonese variation of Zhang. My pop, Fu, grew up in Guilin. He moved to Hong Kong as a teenager. I can speak both Mandarin and Cantonese, as well as English.
My father is a physician of Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as staunch Taoist and practitioner of Wing Chun. Me? I know a bit and like my pop, I'm studying to be a doctor.
In the mean time I have to deal with my artistic girlfriend, Mei-Ling, and four younger siblings at absolutely drive my crazy. There's Dewei and Jun, the pranksters, Xue Fang the tattle tale and Shen the innocent tag along. What is an older brother to do? Can I survive friends, family and college life? Dammit, I hope so!
Characters:
Huojin (Age 20) - A mature, but somewhat shy young man. He loves high-tech gadgets and trendy. His fallacies are his hot-temper (fitting of his name) and his distrust of strangers. Although he is a modern man, he respects traditional Chinese culture and the Tao.
Dewei (Age 17) - A bit of a deviant, hence the decision to dye his hair blonde (much to his mother's dismay). He loves skateboarding and video games. Deep down he really is a nice guy and an occasional voice of reason whenever he gets involved with his brother, Jun's schemes.
Jun (Age 15) - The practical jokester of the Cheung siblings. He is smart and is constantly scheming of ways to blackmail Huojin into getting the things he wants. He is the most immature of the family and constantly finds himself being put in his place by their father.
Xue Fang (Age 12) - A lone girl in a family of brothers. She is a real daddy's girl and somewhat tomboyish. Tattling is her talent, which she uses quite often.
Shen (Age 9) - An innocent boy of the tender age of nine. He is the most like their father in looks and personality. He often tags along with Xue Fang and loves dragon's beard candy.
Fu - The father of the bunch and a celebrated TCM physician and Wing Chun master. He is quite strict, but also known for his gentleness and compassion. He is originally from Guilin, China, but grew up in Wan Chai. He uses modern conveniences, but is otherwise traditional. He prefers to wear silk changshans because of his Manchu heritage.
Guanyin - Named after the "Goddess of Mercy". She is the mother of the Cheung siblings and a writer of poetry. She married Fu at age 18 and he 35. She is now 40 years old and quite happy in her marriage. She is half Han Chinese and half Japanese (her mother) and has many relatives residing in Tokyo.
Desheng - Huojin's grandfather and Fu's father. He is a retired doctor that spends much of his time in the playing weiqi or in meditation. He comes across as a bit grumpy sometimes, but in fact has a wild sense of humor.
Hua - Desheng's venerable, yet loving wife. She is an old-fashioned woman that spends her time cooking or visiting with other women her age. True to her name, she has a fondness for flowers.
HKU Students
Mei-Ling Ma - Huojin's girlfriend. She is an art major. She is sweet, if not a little spontaneous. She likes to keep her boyfriend on his toes, but never hurt him on purpose. She loves manga and dreams of designing her own someday. She resides in Starr Hall.
Cheng Bai - One of Huojin's buddies at University Hall. He has a passion for soccer and dragon boat racing. He is originally from Beijing.
So-Yee Wong - Another of Huojin's friends. He is a Hong Kong native. He's the quietest of the bunch, but has a large collection of girly mags.
Mai Sung - One of Huojin and Mei-Ling's female friends. She too hales from Hong Kong. She is an English major and plays volleyball.
Antagonists
Gan Wei - A mysterious man that is a master of black tiger kung fu. His home is in Shanghai, but he frequently travels throughout Asia on business. It is rumored that he has ties with the criminal underground.
