There were a mission that became a trap for Holly, Jack, Kurt and Sam. To rescure his Familiy, Sam had absorb the energy of a Nova generator. But it was a littl to mutch for him. The Energy burn his eyes and his spinal cord out. He nearly die on that. But since then he can see Energy like he have new eyes. He can see generators or reaktors from a mile. The thing on his neck replace his lost spinal. It goes from his head to his lower back.
