Well, I think it the same as to why Mario, Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, a lot of old cartoon characters wear gloves. Something about its easier to animate and works best in black backgrounds.

Nah its a design reason for those specific characters. Like you notice a lot of old cartoon characters wear 4 fingers instead of 5, its cuz its easier to draw. Things like that
