Airliners have changed in a mostly incremental manner since the first Airbus in the 1970s, but various research and development programs are aiming to significantly reduce fuel consumption. This concept draws from such projects, notably the Boeing truss-braced transsonic wing and X-48 blended wing body demonstrator and the NASA X-57 multi-motor electric airplane.
