I think I mean to read those books eventually; they were popular in my house for a while but I was not fond of reading at the time...

If you're at all interested in accessible character-focused fantasy fiction/satire, I'd give the series my recommendation. It's quickly become a favorite of mine, and obviously I'm drawn to doodling the characters within all the damn time. Small Gods may be a good introductory book.
As for the aliens, no need to claim fault! I'm just happy you like my scratchings.
