In Memorandum: to all of the heroes of Veteran's Day
This image is of my father and his K9 Donor during WWII. They served in the Pacific. I still have Donor's discharge papers.
As humans, we are what we are. I have no idea why we can't get along on the grander scale of things. There are so many theories.
My heart and thoughts are with everyone who served their countries in all wars, and on all sides.

If they were to listen to the common soldier, it could have ended that first Christmas.
Wouldn't that make for an interesting alt timeline. One of the most brutal wars in history, ended by our collective humanity.

Thank for your commitment to finding the brighter, warmer parts of our past, and bringing it up with your stories and recollections, so that those sentiments and thoughts would never be weathered or tarnished, and so we could all benefit from experiencing them!
These last years have been a painful lesson to the younger generations of how the combatants on both sides of any conflict could be heroes and monsters, victims and executioners, peacemakers and warmongers. But the more important, overarching lesson is that war is the enemy of all mankind, and every war that hadn't been prevented is lost by all its participants from the very start.
Eternal memory to your father, who was learning and teaching the same lessons nearly a century ago!

And much reverence and respect goes to Donor for his service, too!
Even though we don't have cavalry participating in humanity's wars nowadays, it is remarkable that the animal world experiences these disasters not only as especially vicious wildfires, but also as companions and helpers, tracking, sniffing out explosives, carrying stuff, guarding, reconnoitering... There have been cases of service animals earning (admittedly, ceremonial) rank in the military for their accomplishments and reliability, and there are official medals for wartime gallantry that are awarded to such animals.
This could be seen as a bit of cruel joke, since those beasts never asked for getting involved, but then neither did a lot of the conscripts and draftees, and the war is on big cruel joke on this long-suffering world, anyway.

Sergeant Reckless is the reason why you should never underestimate the value of a good, loyal horse. I was in tears at some parts listening to The Fat Electrician recount her story: https://youtu.be/NJhxBuLI-eE?si=d-TMu5F1J66LMGvo
Thank you for sharing that video! I didn't care much for the gung-ho style of presentation (joking about a woman who's lost her leg to a landmine? seriously?), or the circus events following Sgt. Reckless' "return" to San Francisco (she was a South Korean horse, after all), but it was nice to get a fuller account of her story, and to see that footage.
My maternal grandfather served in WWII in the Pacific theater in the Aleutians, "playing poker." I never knew him - he passed away from Parkinson's shortly after my parents met - but, when we visited the National Pacific War Museum, my mother learned he wasn't just playing poker. My grandmother was convinced he had Parkinson's from something until she died in 2012. A few years later my mother, a psychiatrist, made the connection between what we learned in the Gulf War about explosion injuries and his mental health when she started treating former NFL players as part of the concussion lawsuit settlements
My paternal grandfather, on the other hand, helped design the tail for the SR-71 Blackbird, and he celebrated his 90th birthday around Easter earlier this year.
Two sides of a war, united in a marriage - what war tries to tear apart. Fairly poetic if you ask me.
(Also, the restaurant where I work apparently gives veterans free coffee on Veteran's Day, which is awesome.)

I look forward to my coffee tomorrow... Now then - the Aleutians is the 'almost' forgotten war. I've been to Dutch Harbor. Even then, in 1974, it was pretty torn up. The Japanese landed there and held the place. There was a good deal of fighting.
And the tail of the SR71 - I'm very impressed. Be sure to tell Alex that as she would greatly love to hear it.
*hugs...

Definite 'Papa vibes' here! He wasn't a K9 Handler (I wasn't even a sparkle in his eyes at the time! ;-D ), and most of the pictures of him in 'Nam are with my older brothers. I keep two for sentimental value, and also have one set of his Dog Tags, too.
It's true. Humanity refuses to learn from our mistakes, as history has proven over-and-over again.
It's frustrating and humbling both at the same time.
To all Veterans out there, both living or deceased-
Happy Veterans Day!
