Your feet find soft wet mud that softly swallows them, your eyes find gnarled and wicked looking trees with clawed branches, your ears are bombarded with the song of uncountable insects and frogs, and the rest of you finds a humidity that hangs over everything like a soaking wet cloth. The air around you reeks of life at its most sickening: nauseating greenery, thick mud, filthy musk, tepid water, sweet rot, and the stink of shit form a cloying wad of sensation in your throat that makes you want to gag, but some instinct within you makes you feel as if you should remain unheard. Under the dull buzz of gnats swarming you hear a splash and a soft murmur nearby.
Turning your head straight up reveals a dismal green sky peeking below a canopy of tall and tangled trees with gauzy mist hung between; sunrise or sunset aren't clear to you in these alien hues. Even with disorientation and confusion holding you so strongly in their grip, the most worrying thing of all is that you find yourself completely alone.Another try at painting, this time of a hag's swampy lair. I took a lot of walks by a swampy river to get a feel for the terrain and the atmosphere--at day and at night--and I think that helped me to properly feel the atmosphere... Aaand then to dial up the creepiness. I actually really like swamps and marshes and find them peaceful, but they certainly do have a creepy side too
Many thanks to
Pawn King for helping me with detailing the trees and twigs--I couldn't have done it without you!
