Zastruga Information: Zastrugi, plural of Zastruga, are an alien species that live on frigid planets. They can adapt quite easily to other cold weather planets or terrain. Their thick coats help keep them warm during the coldest of nights. They dislike heat as they do not shed and their fur only proceeds to retain it.
They have hardened paws made of keratin which makes it easier for them to move over frozen areas. The hard exterior of their hooves, or paws, makes it near impossible for the species to develop a form of frostbite. It however does help to make it easier for them to crack ice.
The Zastrugi species is an omnivore species. They will eat both plant and animal life if one or the other is unavailable to them. They, however, have a dislike of carrion. It does not mean a Zastruga would not eat carrion if there was nothing else to eat.
They have a docile temperament and rarely fight amongst themselves. The few times they engage in physical fights is simply for a mate. Even then physical contact is limited as their hoof-paws can inflict wounds on their foe. Even a small wound can be dangerous in the tundra they call home.
Zastrugi are a hexa-legged species. The dual front limbs serve multiple purposes. From an extra set of limbs for digging, support when standing or submerged, even in mating they serve a purpose.
The family life of the Zastrugi is varied between the male and female. Males are normally solitary, but they will group together only when young; at those times they are from the same litter. Females on the other hand stay together. The female family unit is only apart during breeding season when the fertile females form a different group to choose their male.
It is after the mating, which time lasts a week, that the mated couple stays together. Only after the cubs are born does the male depart and the female, and her cubs, rejoin the other females to raise the cubs.
