I understand the sentiment, but I think this is absolutely beautiful. I love the use of colour in particular, so much!

Even if you weren't initially imagining the colors, they flow very beautifully. The green gives a coolness and warmth to it all, which makes the relationship all the more sweet.

I know I've been guilty of saying this before, but you, my friend, are being too overly critical of yourself. This piece, especially given that it was intended as a gift, looks brilliant. As others have mentioned, the soft, almost aquatic/forest colors blend together so well; and the ambiance/mood set by the rain is somber, yet moving. I must admit, it's kind of strange seeing a Wanderer with a human and *not* thinking of something more...intimate, but in this case I understand that the intention was far from erotic, and in that I feel it succeeds incredibly well. It's honestly beautiful.
