Hey.
Decided to post this too because I am feeling good. :)
It’s a pencil sketch for an outfit style that I imagined for potential orcish cultures (👀👀👀?)
One thing that I always found fascinating is that orcs, despite also existing in modern or futuristic settings, can have cultures that still resume tribal practices or aesthetics. “Tribal” is a term that I have trouble grappling with, as it could also just mean something similar to “Neolithic” despite tribes still existing in modern day for example.
I think the general idea of “tribal” aesthetics invokes things like ideograms, geometry, lines, and body modification (this includes body paint but can go as “far” as piercings and scarring).
I’m not a sociologist, though, so please don’t use me as a source lol.
Anyway…
What I was meaning was an interesting synthesis between tribal aesthetics in modern settings. This exists nowadays with New Age but also Neo-Shamanism and Neo-Paganism, among others. IDK there was something so cool about seeing orcs here on FA, other sites, and my own designs living in worlds full of technology and science yet still maintaining those extreme piercings, those hunter-lifestyle haircuts, those war paints of battles long ended…
…
This is gonna be so nerdy in a description box, but Rimworld is so cool because it invokes the idea that humanity across the stars won’t be forever-increasing in technology. You have peoples on far away planets who use spears and bows despite living thousands of years in our future.
It makes me think of what belief systems will look like in the future. If animism is the belief that spirits exist in everything (including “inanimate” things like the stars, the trees, the wind, our sacred river, etc.), what would they think about machines? In Rimworld, there is a quest where your colony has to hack a terminal for information. A village is built around it as protectors because they worship it, and they see your hacking as defiling the sacred.
After all, if the spirits exist in everything, oh what importance is the spirits that live in the glass box? The lightning-crate that makes words on its glass-thing and hums with the swirling power of its source is sacred, and we must venerate it.
…
…
Anyway, orcs are cool, I am trying to get better at designing/drawing outfits, and you get a bit of sociology. Enjoy.
