Racetrack Playa, Death Valley National Park, California...
Tucked back some distance on a 4x4 road, Racetrack Playa is home to the "moving stones" - large boulders often hundreds of kilograms that mysteriously move (slide, actually, not roll :b) and leave trails along the perfectly-flat, hexagonally-patterned playa floor. The believed mechanism for the stones' movement involves precipitation and wind, but it has never been directly observed.
It's a cool spot.

dude that is kinda disturbing... i like it.
i am fascinated with the idea. this is the kinda thing i want to know how it happens the sort of natural occurrence i puzzle over in my mind each day in thoughts of vacuity, electromagnetism in relation to planetary and electron orbit. gosh i wish i could learn more... only smart people are allowed that sort of thing though.

ice and wind makes sense. giving wind blown over a curved surface would provide lift and force. it is a large plain providing lots of wind and ice... ya its going to happen and should be as expected as a small rock in any wind. the odd thing about it is the extreme scale of forces at work.

Being there blows your mind even more, though. Standing in this plane which is in fact miles wide in diameter at all points, mountains many thousands of feet higher on all sides. The dirt all patterned in hexagons, but none of them are QUITE perfect. Then these rocks, some tiny and some huuuge, with trails in different positions, as if they had some weird gathering going an then you showed up and they all froze. Crazy space! I'm glad they won't pave the road to it.

nothing is stable. nothing is perfic. nothing is equall. until all is considered then it is all equal and is all perfect and all is in stable calculated movement in time.
