The fourth race in  JacktheLizard 's Single Earth Saga.

An amphibious race, they come in two varieties. The sleeker salt-water Malquetze live in and along the shores of the southern coasts, while the stockier fresh-water Malquetze live in the fresh water streams and lakes further inland. They make their living as miners of the underwater world, and as traders with the other races. They also have the unique ability to, no more than once in their lives, change their sex. Due to this, and the minimal outward differences between males and females, they have a remarkable gender equality compared to other races.

All races have magical affinity with the Flow, but for the Malquetze, manipulation of water is vital to any sort of living away from the water. They can wear long flowing garments to keep out the heat, and another layer to keep in the moisture, but drawing water from the air is a matter of life and death. The "horns" on their head are actually external gills, enabling them to breathe underwater.
