CHAPTER 50
That same afternoon, Regthar was invited by his friends to practice Khudok at the Renzar community sports arena. They wanted him to gradually resume his usual activities. His colleague Ulk accompanied him from the beginning of the practices, both entering the dressing rooms. After dressing in the regulation attire, both went out to the arena to practice with the other fighters.
Regthar was surprised to see his sister Natany practicing with other colleagues in another sector of the room. After a previous warm-up, Regthar approached her to help her with her practices.
"Everything okay, Natany?" asked the male. But she continued to stretch her body in silence. Regthar thought he saw anger on her face.
"Natany?"
"Grrr... How do you think I can be Regt after everything that's happened!" The female replied clenching her teeth.
"Okay, let me help you with your warm-up" Regthar said, entering the circle to begin to force himself against her. Both brothers linked arms and began to push forward. They tensed their muscles to the max as they pressed against each other.
“Grrr… Are you going to tell me what's bothering you? Or I'll have to guess, sister."
"Grrr... There's nothing to say!"
"I know you. You don't fool me"
“Grrr And what do you want me to tell you? That Esteban died because of a bloody criminal who is still on the loose?!" Natany declared suddenly as she pushed hard forward. Regthar, surprised by those words, did not resist and went back, sitting on the ground. They both looked into each other's eyes. Natany was breathing furiously with her hands clenched.
"What the hell are you saying!" Regthar said standing up. But Natany shook her head and took a few steps back.
“Natany! What are you hiding from me?!”
“Grrr… Nothing, Regthar!”
“Grr… Natany! What is happening! Tell me!" Regthar demanded, grabbing Natany from her arms again. They both resumed the exercise by pushing against each other. Their strength was colossal. They reached a point of balance with tense muscles. Natany felt inside the pressure to tell the truth to her only brother. Tears mixed with the sweat on her face, while a whirlwind of sensations flooded her head. Noticing his sister's sobs, Regthar stopped pushing and grabbed her shoulders.
"Natany"... Regthar said and then hugged her tightly. The female couldn't handle the pressure anymore and she began to cry on her brother's shoulders. In the midst of her crying, the renzar police declared.
“The overturning of the vehicle was not due to Lilethe's drunkenness. Rather, they were both attacked by a skunktaur with unknown psionic powers. Esteban… Esteban threw himself on hym to defend Lilethe. They both fell off the cliff. But Esteban was badly injured. That's probably why he couldn't save himself."
“Oh no! By Grom! Natany! Why do not you tell me before!
"I couldn't, brother. We received an order from the Chakona Government and the Federation, to prevent panic and possible reprisals against the skunktaurs. I'm sorry Regthar."
The male held his head and took a few steps around the circle. He looked at Natany perplexed. Then he said.
“So, Esteban's death was not an accident. There is someone responsible!" To which Natany added.
“And we believe it is the same one involved in Tagle's death. Hy is very powerful. Hy picked me up off the ground easily with hys telekinesis."
"That! Did you face that bastard? When?"
“That same morning. Hy calls hymself Faise Skunktaur. Hy was one of the patients that Lilethe visited. Hy organized the party where they were. In hys drunkenness, the skunktaur revealed hys real nature. According to one of the witnesses, hy mentally controlled the chakats. Hy also to Lilethe. And surely Tagle, causing hys suicide ”
"By Grom!" Regthar said sitting down on the ground. “That's why Sorah said that she had a bad feeling. And the boys didn't come that night. Lilethe was being manipulated. And Esteban surely went looking for hym and also succumbed to hys control through his connection with Lilethe ”
"That's what we believe, brother"
"By Grom!" Regthar exclaimed raising his hands to his face. Natany, approaching him, hastened to say.
“Regthar, all the police, we, are behind hys steps. Also the Federation with specialized agents. Faise won't be able to escape."
“But you still haven't caught it! Grrr… Natany!” Regthar said with anger in his voice.
“Regthar!”
“You know what this means, right?!” exclaimed the male.
"Wait Regthar, what are you going to do!"
"You know it. I will demand my right to the Justa”
“Grrr! You're crazy! This is not Grom!” Natany said taking him by the shoulders.
“Grrr… Let me go! Esteban was my son! Also Lilethe! It's my right!
“Regthar! Think of Sorah and Hajo!” Said the female trying to persuade him. But Regthar withdrew from the arena, dazed and determined. Natany remained in the anguished place, and sighing.
"Idiot, I'll have to arrest you if you try to do anything crazy, bro!" She said to herself, before relaxing her body and sitting on the ground. Natany knew that she had just made a mistake and a serious breach of police code by telling his brother the truth. But at the same time, she acknowledged that she felt some relief in doing it.
That afternoon, in Eucla City, Vera was sitting in the main chair of the house, while she pressed one of the cushions against her. She was anxious. Her father Tiber would be arriving soon. Vera didn't know what to say. She felt a mixture of anger and sadness in her heart. The death of her friend Esteban created additional stress for her. She didn't know if it was the right time to talk to her father.
Sonia and Don approached her trying to reassure her.
“Vera. Always keep calm. Your father may not agree with your decisions. But he has the right to express his opinion." Sonia said in a motherly tone.
“And whatever happens, Sonia and I will support you. Because we know how much you love Jhonny and he loves you” added Don stroking her hair.
"Thank you both for being so kind to me" Vera said, and then hugged them both. At that moment, the doorbell rang again.
“It must be your father. I'll open it” Sonia said as she headed for the door.
"Good luck, little one" Said the great bear Don, closing one eye. When Sonia and Tiber arrived in the living room of the house, Sonia declared.
"Well, we'll leave you guys alone. You are in your house.” After which, she and the bear retired to another room.
"Hi little girl. How are you?"
"I'm fine dad"
“Uh… Well… Your mother and sister miss you.”
"And your dad? Do you miss me too?" Vera asked. Tiber after sighing, she answered her.
"Of course, little one" after which there was an awkward silence.
“Vera, I'll get to the point. I, I apologize for what I told you at home. I was angry about your decision. But our house is also your house, daughter. I'm sorry.
"Ok dad"
“And as for your human partner…”
"Johnny"
“Yes, Jhonny, well, I must admit that I didn't give myself the opportunity to understand… Daughter, understand that I grew up thinking badly about humans. But I know that not everyone is the same."
“The same can be said for morphs, right?”
“Yes, yes… You're right. Maybe I should have given Jhonny a chance” Said the male nervously. Vera, noticing this, took his hands and declared.
“Dad, give him a chance. Know him, and then evaluate. I'm not asking you to accept him, just give him a chance. You raised me in an incredible way, dad. You and mom did it. You two gave me the confidence and wisdom to make the right choice. Tell me, don't you trust me?"
"Oh, Vera, of course I trust you, daughter"
“Then trust that I made a good choice with Jhonny. I did not choose him on a whim. I did it with my heart and my head."
"It's alright daughter. I accept that you are with him. If you're happy, that's fine with me. But don't ask me for more for now"
“Prrrr… That's enough for me dad! Thank you!" Vera said hugging Tiber. After a few minutes of mutual caressing, the male declared.
"Your mother told me that you were sad about the death of a human friend of yours in Amistad"
"Dad, I'm sad. His name was Esteban. And he was more than a colleague, he was a friend. We live with him, we share a lot of time with him. We have fun with him. And now he is gone. Johnny is devastated. I can see his sad face and I don't know what to do to make him feel better."
“Yes I understand and I am very sorry. Sonia told me that you want to travel to the capital"
"That's how it is. We want to go with Mr. Regthar and his wife Sorah. They are Renzar, adoptive parents of Esteban. And we want to be with them. Also, Esteban's lifemate, Lilethe Skunktaur is our friend and we want to go see hym at the hospital."
"I see. Well. If that makes you feel better, I'll give you credits so you can travel."
"What? But Dad!"
"Yes, it's... It's the least I can do after the things I told you... And how I treated Jhonny... It's not much, but it will be enough for the outward journey at least"
"Oh dad, thank you so much!" Vera exclaimed happily.
"Now, I would like to speak with Jhonny, if possible, alone" Tiber added.
"Uh? Well… I'll call him, ”said Vera, after which she got up from the sofa to go in search of her lifemate, who was in the backyard of the house.
The sunset was getting worse in Amistad. Mark Sanders, and his wife Delfina and Emily were at Lorel's Bar, having a snack. The two females considered that it was good that Mark left the house and distracted his head from him, after what happened with his friend Esteban. The human veteran, however, was still not convinced that the boy was dead. In his life, he had seen many acquaintances die and on this occasion, the man had doubts. Although rescuers had found foot remains and DNA traces in the sea, Mark had seen no bodies. There was no burial or funeral. Just a symbolic memorial in the cemetery. Therefore, for him, his death was not one hundred percent certain. He was absorbed in his thoughts when suddenly, Rena Skunktaur together with hys partner Hesper, passed by their table and greeted cordially.
"Hello Mr. Sanders"
"Eh... Hello, Rena" The man said, a little surprised.
"This is my lifemate, Hesper."
“Oh, another skunk… My pleasure” Mark replied. "These are my wives, Delfina and Emily," he added, introducing his companions. They all greeted each other in a friendly way. Mark cordially invited them to sit at the table. But Rena excused hymself, citing lack of time.
"Rena, before you go, can I talk to you?"
"Sure" The skunktaur replied, wagging its tail. The human stood up from the table and walked a few meters away with Rena. Emily and Delfina looked at each other without saying anything, while Hesper shrugged, smiling.
"What is it, Mr. Sanders?"
"Just tell me Mark, like Esteban did"
"Okay Mark"
"Tell me something. Doesn't this seem strange to you? I am not convinced that Esteban is dead."
“Mark, the evidence is compelling. Hopefully you are right. But even with my talents I have not been able to detect his presence. Also, since the accident, together with Rogar we combined our talents with other red paws and we couldn't know his location. Also the skunktaurs specialized in the search for lost people, used their psychic talents. But there were no positive results. That took all hope away from us” Rena replied with a sigh.
“Hmmm… Maybe you skunktaurs are too confident in your talents. I trusted more in my instinct"
"I'm sorry Mark. We all feel pain in our hearts and cling to the slightest possibility that he is still alive. And that I can understand. But believe me. If Esteban were alive, we would have detected him by now” Rena said with hys eyes moist with emotion. Mark, understanding hys regret, took hys hands and declared.
“Rena, you will understand that I will not stay still. I'll investigate on my own. I hope you do not mind."
“I don't mind, Mark. Esteban was your friend and you loved him very much. Do what you have to do to make your heart calm” Rena said, caressing the human's face. Then they both went back to the table with the others. After saying goodbye, Rena and Hesper left Lorel's Bar.
"What are you thinking, Mark?" Delfina asked her husband. But this one, he just took another sip of her coffee and sighed.
"About Esteban"
"Awww... Honey," Emily said, licking his face gently.
