Zar'el Nor Isai.
Master of All Energies. Indispensable. A walking problem.
"If you rub a magic lamp for too long, you may be electrocuted by non-magical currents."
(The sign at the entrance to the Invisible Energies Department lab.)
Zar'el is the headache of many Masters and Masters of the Academy, ever since he entered the Academy. He is the only student to have been expelled and re-admitted twice. All because of his extraordinary ability to understand and control magic and energy flows. An undoubted talent, but his highly unpredictable behaviour caused him a lot of problems. Whether it's because of the control of chaotic energies, or because of an inborn character trait, but Zar'el just can't sit still and so is in constant motion and experimentation. Disrupted workshops, damaged equipment, and other incidents have become the norm when he appears at the Academy. As well as unexpected discoveries mixed with ingenious solutions bordering on the absurd.
Zar'el is probably the only one, perhaps with the exception of Lord Asterion, who understands the structure of the Academy from the point of view of magic. This ancient structure, founded when the Gods first set foot in this world, defies all logic and common sense. Its mere existence defies the natural order of things, for a structure of such size and construction simply cannot physically exist. Its entire being is imbued with a magic so ancient and diverse that it would take more than one dragon's lifetime to explore it.
And it was the dragons who were the first to lay the foundations for this grand structure. But even they do not know when exactly a lone tower with a couple of outbuildings turned into a grandiose spire with many aqueducts and towers. And no matter how majestic the Academy is from above, its underground floors are much deeper and more extensive. Countless laboratories, workshops, testing grounds and storage facilities intermingle with arched bridges and staircases to form an impossibly intricate tangle of the underground world. And all this is braided with a network of magic so dense that it has become a natural part of the very essence of the Academy. Zar'el had felt in his element here from the first days.
Despite numerous complaints and even expulsion of the young mage, there were always reasons to bring him back. And when disaster struck, it was with his help that the worst damage to the Academy's magical structure was repaired. After that, even the most biased and harsh of the Academy's top officials had no objections to Zar'el becoming the new Master. After his promotion, the young Master took up his duties with incredible vigour. And while his methods raised many questions about their safety, no one was left in doubt as to their unquestionable effectiveness.
Now fully grown, Zar'el had decided to found his own Claw. His parents were from the far northern continent of Norn and had long since abandoned the traditions of Draconid society. By choosing the name of the Claw and its symbol, Zar'el had finally written his name in the annals of the Academy and the Undercity. His parents, wife and children were given the clan name Isai, and Zar'el himself could use the prefix Nor to signify his supremacy in the family. And only time will tell whether the name of Claw Isai will be preserved in the centuries or not.
* The prefix (Nor) in dragon language means literally the first/senior of the family. It is a respectful address and a status symbol for both draconids and dragons. All Claws have their own understanding of who it applies to, but one rule is common to all: (Nor) denotes the leader of the clan and his primacy over other members of the family.
