It's based off a real world legend as opposed to a proper animal, the shisa. Indeed, on the wikipedia page for the shisa, the references include Growlithe and Arcanine, and the Japanese sprites make the comparison clearer. http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/w.....Spr_1b_059.png
