This idea of a artificial floating island is not new, since it is the backdrop for Jules Verne's novel "L'Ile à Hélice". I was inspired by beautiful illustrations from Jean-Pierre Bouvet concerning this novel, but said images have disappeared from the web and were not saved by the Internet Archive.
<p>To limit the considerable difficulties linked with seasteading (see this article on libertarian utopias for failed attempts) I opted for a modular construction and reliance on wind/solar power. Each hexagonal module is linked to the others with dampened connections, to reduce the effects of waves.
