This is about the 4th time I sewed the waistband on, over all. You've seen these before, I posted a stretched version a few months ago, but since then I took a calmer approach and finished what I set out to do.
The inspiration for these is a pair of 1970s Sears underwear I'd got new old stock on ebay. They have a waistband remarkably like the typical sewing notion elastic that feels good. That was what made me realize i could make underwear i'd want to wear at home. The velvet is simply due to an interest in using materials in unconventional ways and testing the results. They pass with flying colors.
The styling is very clearly briefs, but the fit is actually more akin to panties as the seams on the front are all for show. They were made from the pattern of a disassembled pair of briefs which I've had for sooooo long the elastic waistband lost its elasticity. this was why the first take posted in august was so stretched out. Just took some finagling the sewing stance to get the elastic attached to the body correctly. The next couple pairs will get easier to keep the stitching where I want it instead of all over the place. Just a matter of practice.
I've worn them on the most grueling test I could think of to both check how the material fairs for the usecase, and how it interacts with the body. happy to report walking a couple miles they didn't rub and they don't chafe. They officially entered my rotation last week.
