By all accounts, Vanitas should have been utterly erased from existence. His darkness, completely extinguished. He knows this perfectly well, as he would be keen to remind those who 'killed' him. But instead of being naught but dispersed darkness, his form had returned in a dark part of the Thiccverse Beyond, appearing in a twisted version of Gravity Falls where Pacifica is a hippie, Gideon is a decent friend of hers, and the Pines twins are scam artists and performers skilled in the art of sorcery. Mabel 'Maboobs' Gleeful found her eye caught by Vanitas one day, and as such deduced what he was by sheer measure of his powers and his presence being different from the other supernatural phenomena in the Falls. From there, she intended on luring him in to be a pawn of theirs.

Instead, the pair became complete partners due in no small part to Vanitas' newfound skill and his understanding of how this alternate reality had 'blessed' his physique with more than just a reflection of his power. Whatever his new intentions are for the Thiccverse are, they are no doubt evil.

And finally, wrapping up the important KH cast for now, we got Vanitas! Had to give this guy a better story arc due to how he was basically wasted with KH3.
