Cora's Backstory
As a baby Cora was abandoned, left inside the edge of a forest lining the outskirts of a small town. She was thankfully found by the owner and caretaker of a small orphanage nearby that had only a few small boys under her care. She was given the name Cora, its meaning being “maiden” or “daughter” and she was the first female child the woman had taken in.
As Cora grew she was much loved by the inhabitants of the orphanage and even the town. Even as small as she was, and even with her being much younger than the children who already resides there she became the ‘older sister’ of the boys rather quickly. Cora cared for them and new additions as if they were her true family.
Nobody ever knew anything about how she came to be abandoned or who Cora’s biological family may be, but she didn’t care either. At a very young age she learned how to cook and clean, take care of the children, even doing random errands for the townspeople to help raise money for the home. Their family grew larger and larger, even bringing in another caretaker to help.
Cora was a bit shy but also brave, so she would warm up rather quickly once she pushed past her shell to open up to someone. She had a big heart and loved each and every person in that home. Once Cora was of an age where she could hold an actual job she did so, working incredibly hard and handing over all her earnings to the orphanage. She planned to stay and be a caretaker and financial provider once she turned 18 despite the fact most of her original ‘siblings’ (as Cora had adopted them as her family) had left to find their own lives elsewhere when they reached the same age.
Cora’s birthday was celebrated on the day she was found and so the day she turned 18 they all did so together. Even her brothers who had left were back to visit for this special day, staying a couple nights to see their baby sister become the adult they always knew she would be. Cora received many handmade gifts from the children that she would cherish. Her most prized possession however was a small picture she had been gifted, taken by a traveling photographer and given as a token of appreciation for her hard work as his assistant during his short stay in the village.
As the children were climbing into bed Cora went to her small room she was moving into for the first day as an official caretaker and settled all her little presents on the dresser. She picked up the photograph and looked over the faces fondly. It was taken a few years ago and so still had her older, yet somehow younger, brothers beside her. Cora smiled warmly and slid the photograph into her back pocket.
Now that she would be a full time caretaker her job in the village was moved to a nighttime position so that she could help with the kids in the mornings getting them ready for school and then in the evenings once they were home again. Tonight would be Cora’s first night doing so and she was a bit nervous and shy about meeting her new coworkers so the photograph helped her be brave and settle her nerves.
Cora left for work, which was a bit of a walk as the orphanage was settled on the outer edge of town away from the main core of the small settlement. It was an old warehouse that the townspeople donated materials and their time and skills to help refurbish into a suitable home for them back when the owner first purchased the building.
Cora’s night was rough but she had nothing to complain about. Her coworkers were friendly and made opening up quite easy for her truth be told. It was hard work but Cora always did it with a huge smile being incredibly appreciative of the fact she even had a job, a way to help provide for and support the other children and her ‘mother’ who had always been there for her. This thought alone kept Cora’s heart light and her troubles easily overcome.
When her first shift was completed Cora said her cheerful goodbyes and headed down the path that would take her home again. After awhile she started to see the towns homes spreading out more and more until the industrial size warehouses and small factory, which had long been abandoned as well, came into view. Cora picked up her pace knowing she didn’t have much longer to go now. It was still very dark outside but before too long the sun would be peeking over the horizon and she had a big breakfast to get started on.
As Cora drew closer to her home she sniffed at the air smelling something unusual. At first she wasn’t sure what it was and sniffed around keeping her eyes peeled for what it could be. It almost smelled like that time they roasted the small boar, a Hunter had gifted them after a particularly bountiful hunting trip, over a fire.
Fire … Just as Cora recognized the smell her tired brain had been slow to process, she saw the light on the horizon. However, the sun was nearly an hour away from showing itself. Cora froze for a split second as fear struck her heart. Just as quickly she moved once again sprinting with all her strength towards home.
The light got brighter and brighter until it was almost as if daytime had come as she rounded the giant building blocking her view to see a sight she would never forget. Her home. The only one she had ever known. It was completely engulfed in flames.
Cora stood rooted to the spot unsure what she could possibly do. The only phone was buried deep in the heart of this inferno and it would take her nearly an hour even at full speed to get back to where she could get help for them. It didn’t take long for Cora to realize there was something else wrong with the sight.
There was no sound beyond the roaring and crackling of the giant flames. No yelling. No screaming. No crying. Nothing. Her breathing coming hard and heavy as the reality of the situation slammed itself into place. Cora quickly ran around the entire building getting as close as she could screaming for anyone to respond. She got no answers and found no entry points that would allow her access inside.
Cora took off as fast as she could, tears streaming down her face as she ran harder than she even knew possible. The first house she came to she attacked the door ferociously pounding and crying out to the inhabitants. Cora knew them well as she would run errands for the elderly couple on a regular basis. After a few long torturous moments they finally opened the door.
Cora’s pure white fur was covered in sorry patches from getting as close as she could to the blazing home crying out for anyone to answer her. The tears had created steaks down her blackened cheeks and she quickly pleaded to use their phone explaining the barest of details as they let her inside. Cora rushed in and called for help passing the phone to the older woman as soon as she reported the fire and where it was leaving the couple to fill in the details they had been able to get out of her. They knew quite a lot about the orphanage and its inhabitants so Cora trusted they would be able to handle the rest.
She made her way back as quickly as possible and resumed her rounds of the building looking for any signs of people inside and out. But Cora found nothing once again. Soon the fire truck was rushing up and people were everywhere working to stop the atrocity that was destroying everything she knew and cared about. Firefighters were pulling her away as she screamed and fought trying desperately to continue her search.
Cora knew deep inside that it was fruitless. From the look of the building it had been burning for quite some time before she had found it. Her worst fear was proven true as the captain came and informed her the fire appeared to have been going for at least more than two hours from what they could tell. Cora collapsed to her knees on the ground barely able to rasp out any words between coughing to ask about survivors. Her voice was dry and hoarse from all the screaming and smoke she had inhaled. Cora stared up at the captains dismal expression and the slight shake of his head told her what she already knew. There was no sign of anyone having survived.
It took almost three hours to finally end the nightmare before her and she sat there rooted to the ground on her knees staring hopefully for the sight of a firefighter having found someone. Her wish went unfulfilled. Even longer still, between answering questions about how many people lived there and where they would have been, Cora sat and waited with a lump in her chest where her heart should have been beating.
Officially, many hours later, the bodies laid out in black bags reflecting the light of the morning sun, she was told every single family member had perished. Guilt. Despair. More guilt. These were all she knew over the next days. Her memory of the following days was incomplete. Somehow Cora ended up staying with the elderly couple she’d woken that night, but she doesn’t even remember how. All she knew was that it was her fault. Especially her brothers, who were only there because of her birthday.
It took her some time to get her mind straight but once Cora did she vowed to continue living her life in a way that her family would be proud of. A way that would honor them. She worked for a few weeks letting herself rely on the elderly couple for a short while. After which Cora took her earnings, gave half of them to the elderly couple to repay them having taken such good care of her in her time of need, then left her hometown behind.
Cora from then on would travel from city to city, town to town, settling only for short periods of time. She would settle into a shelter if one was available or find a room she could pay for with work. Working whatever jobs she could find Cora kept herself busy. Once her set time was over she would take nearly all of her savings and donate them to the local orphanage, and if there wasn’t one then she would take the funds and Cora would add it to the next donation.
Cora never spent money on herself that wasn’t a necessity and every waking moment was spent working to provide for these homes. Her hope was that they never experienced hardships or accidents. Cora wanted to provide as much as she could for as many homes as she could. This was how she would repay her debt and alleviate her guilt.
