The plate was already banded with blue and gold. I painted the griff, and added the gold highlights and feathers on the rim.
This 8" plate was on my table at FE 2011, and will be shown at FCN in April. I priced it at $50 because of the gold content (and 'cuz it's so cool!)

With the addition of the gold on the center of the plate, I would not use it for food. Gold is a luster that sits on the surface of the glaze, and with rough handleing can scratch. (like your grandmother's china with the gold rims...the rims always look worn after many years.)
Anything I make without a luster (mother-of-pearl or gold) CAN be used for food. (all of my mugs are food safe!)

Lol! Lots of practice with a crowquill and ink from my inking days for Arrow Comics. The 'ink' is really thinned-down china paint...in this case, I used a deep blue. The slick china surface makes it a bit of a challange too! Oh, and the paint does not dry. It stays wet till you fire it...so no touchie!
