Okay.. the plant just goes down into the tube.. so once Mario goes down the tube after the plant... wouldn't the above just happen?

I'm with Ludren. I'm going to assume is was running at 12fps (or your timing is very spaced)?
Always use 16fps at least, makes it smoother and better paced.
Still, it's a good spin on the idea. I always though the plant just crawled back into a smaller side-pipe (I played way too much Mario 3 on the NES)
