Angie, the former human, learns that scales and muscles aren't a protection from everything the other children can throw at her. A friend at school is all she needs, to paint is all she wants.

Hah! If you thought so highly of this, wait until you see some of the art that I'm holding onto until my sequel stories are published. I'm sure the artist would be thrilled to hear your opinion! My favorite in the scene had always been the way the paint stains splattered across her scales.
While having a social support network certainly makes retaining your core identity and memories easier, it is by no means a hard and fast rule for who becomes lost or not. It depends on the individual. How badly do they want to hold on to who they are despite what they see in the mirror?
It is always possible to bring them back later. Angie here was lost (feral) for something like 6-8 months. Being lost does leave a lasting impression on your behaviors though. Angie sees no problem thinning out the local white-tailed deer population (pests that they can be), but she is also aware that it unnerves humans to see her do that, so she does it surreptitiously at night when she wants a change from human fare.

Interesting. I thought that would be the case. After all, such large bodies need a lot of sustenance. Do you perhaps have a discord or somewhere else we could talk? I’d be interested in that.
I actually had a dream about your world. About two brothers, one gets transformed and the other doesn’t. While that happens, the human abandons the dragon out of fear but regrets it later. Eventually he decides to find his lost brother again. Wonder how that redemption story would turn out!
