Some people really need to be told what to draw and some people really just love the attention you get when you do a nice commish. Some of us really just need the money.
The way it works with me, inspiration is like fuel and my skill is like an engine and my talent is like oil. When I do a commission, I burn the highest grade fuel possible. The inspiration I feel on a good commish is like jet fuel. I burn it hot and I run the engine hard. My skills are pushed to redline and my talent dries up from the harsh treatment. Then, like any good machine that's been run too hard, I need to stop for maintenance. I need to find new fuel, because each commission burns more fuel. I need to change out the oil and I need to revitalize or replace the worn parts in the engine.
I am not the norm in this, or at least I don't think so. Doing commission work is almost like a drug for me. I get a really big high on it (you've seen how fast I can do that) and then I crash.

Not really. It's a bit more like speed. I don't get the notice. I realize, suddenly, "I've crashed." After I complete the piece.
Remember the old Warner Brothers cartoons? The guy walks off the cliff and then goes, "Oh shit!" with just his eyes. Then he feels underneath him and there's nothing. Same kinda deal.
