I like the atmosphere in this! The character looks in a very interesting way and has an adorable expression. There is also something very slightly psychedelic to this, making me feel a little as if I was next to this creature and smoking something perhaps, lol. His expression is a little like that, but this sort of magic and beautiful nightsky can have this effect by itself, I think. :P
I'm glad I was able to capture his expression so well! The idea is that he's feeling several emotions all at once that essentially translate to a sort of aloof giddiness. He's relieved to finally be out of his lamp, and yet amazed and somewhat proud that he is actually doing real magic. Please check out Parietal's story, if you're interested in learning more about this character!
Sorry it took me this long to write all this up.
I love absolutely everything about this picture, as I said in chat, but I think what stands out to me the most are the details I didn’t come up with. The plants at Phoenix’s feet are a very nice touch and are thematically in line with what he is. And originally I asked for a daytime scene so that there could be decent lighting, but the idea of Phoenix making his own lighting was a much better idea, which leads into my next point: his expression.
Phoenix isn’t some bottomless fouuntain of incredible wisdom like other mana dragons in the story are. He’s young, clueless, and has no idea what he’s doing. His first act of magic (while still human) made him trade places with a bound djinn, and his second made him accidentally set himself on fire. His expression here is the look of someone just starting to realize that they actually CAN do something right, and you captured it perfectly.
You’re an amazing artist. Thank you again so much for doing this.
