I've never played Sonic CD. I only got the gist of the game's plot from the Archie Comics Sonic issue #25.

Later on, though? I understand that Sonic goes back and forth in time. Is that what that "future" sign implies?

in cd, there some signs like the goal ones, once you pass thru it, you gain speed and teleport to the future / past

Right. That's what I thought they did.

See, I like it when a certain franchise keeps a level of consistency in the setting and characters, and it varies a lot with Sonic.

The movie continuity I like the most, so far.
