Oh man *Ffff*
The weathers getting warm, so my chickens have started laying :3
Just to show some of the different kinds of eggs they've been producing.
The far left is Alyssa's!! She's a polish, and its pretty much the size of a quarter.
The wynadotte twin's eggs, one speckled and the other plain.
Then idk whose egg that is, but it was tasty.
Followed by a delaware(Heritage breed), very large, very high production layers.
Lovin' this 1-2 eggs a day XD Man I'm gonna be up to my eyeballs in eggs.

Lol. I'm suspecting it was my little raptor headed green-feathered freak, or my puffy faced eagle head. They're my two 'mystery hens'. I can't find their breed anywhere, since everyone displays males because of the fine plumage.
But it DID in fact come out of a chicken, I promise XD

That is why I try and buy organic free range eggs, that is the closest I can get to fresh eggs. Not to mention eggs are good for you...got the perfect amount of fat for the first meal of the day. Much better than any grain cereal. All you need is some bacon fat to cook them in and...oh god now I am drooling.
We be meat eaters fo' sho'
I guess I have a plainer pallette for just good ol' scrambled eggs and bacon. Barely cook the bacon (love mine really limp) then dump out half the bacon fat from the pan and throw those eggs in there. Mmmm I think I am gonna have an early supper tonight and totally do that. Husband brought home some thick country bacon that I have been dying to try out.

True dats. I prefer to do just eggs as my meat/dairy intake for breakfast. I feel like I have more energy that way, idk. Heavy meat and dairy for dinner though XD I wish I had a milking goat.. mmm.

all hens, we killed all our roosters since they are all related, and we have neigbors who hate all my pets, and we didnt need all our pets getting hauled off for trying to communicate with the world. yeah, one of my dogs think she is a person, so she talks to the world,so roosters woulda been jumpin on some nerves.
the only downside to the roosters is that my grandma wanted to have em for dinner after we killed em. she grew up on a farm, and was used to eatin fresh chicken, so you can imagine how annoyed she was with my mom's 'christian mass grave' for them, so i lolled hard for a long time.
I have 18 at the moment, but am trimming it down to 7(Don't worry they're not going in a pot :P A local farmer wants some hens and lap roo's).
Get 2 or 3 and start your flock from there :D As long as they have a warm place off of the ground to bunk up that predators can't get into, and lots of grass to munch on between feedings they're pretty happy. They really love tree trunks, especially rotten ones filled with bugs. And make sure you immunize them against merick's disease. They're really easy to keep. My biggest problem(East coast) are foxes(But we have a wire fence to keep them out) and falcons/hawks(We have some netting to keep them sheltered)

For 2-3 chickens? If you have a backyard you can just let them loose out there. Their shit doesn't hurt the soil, unlike predator(Dog/cat/human/etc) feces. It's a SUPER great fertilizer. Whenever I shovel their pen I toss the old hay into my compost pile :)
For 2-3 chickens? You could get away with a coop that's 2 foot long, 18 inches deep and 14 inches high. That's PLENTY of room for them. Make sure you put some perches in there(Dowel rods work great) and a nest for each of them.
They need about 4 square feet of grazing room per hen, and a cup of cracked corn and/or pellets a day. If you have a tractor supply company or southern states nearby, they sell bags of feed for $15 per 50lb bag(Will last you a LONG time). The only other thing they need are crushed oyster shells or tiny tiny rocks to help them digest their food. TSC also sells these nex tot their chicken food :)

I'm too busy being disgusted over the "weathers getting warm" part..
I've always wanted to have my own laying hens! Since it's probably not likely I'll end up living where I can do that, I might just have to become friends with a chicken farmer, but getting them fresh each day sounds so much more decadent :p

Lol, you don't have to hear them goin' at it ever five minutes :P
If you were on the East Coast, I'd be happy to give you some eggs XD And man.. fresh eggs. I just need to slaughter and salt a hog for ham n' eggs and it'd be PERFECT. They're a huge time investment(Well, they feel like it sometimes, but theyre not really) but totally worth it and don't require that much caretaking.
And I understand northern california is pretty agriculture friendly, so don't discount it!

I don't really like the taste of eggs, maybe actual fresh eggs taste good? XD I've never had fresh eggs before. Maybe it's the same principle as shrimp. I don't like shrimp from here on the coast of California, but in Utah and Nevada it didn't taste like dirt, it tasted really good. Hrm. XD
Really? o_o That seems like a tiny egg from a standard! I know polish aren't as big as RIR, but still...XD It's so tiny and cute.
Other than that, how was your experience with McMurray? I've been wanting to get some polish, and thought about ordering through McMurray.

Yeah! Mine are super small, but they're not really fully grown- so i expect the eggs will get better.
McMurray was my first experience and they were really good w/ customer service. I ordered 25 straight run of mixed standards. They sent me a free rarest of rare breeds(Pheonix, male- he's beautiful), and send 28 or 29 in the box just in case any died in shipping. I like that they have such a variety to choose from as well as offer merricks vaccinations. I had a good experience, would reccomend them based on my experience.

Oh! That would make sense. *nod* I bet it's exciting to get your first eggs!! :D
Thanks for telling me. They have a bunch of reviews on their site, but it's always nice to actually hear from someone outside of their site. XD Would love to see some photos of your chickies! <3

Have you ever had the Araucana chickens? Those lay my favorite eggs. I used to love finding those. I also loved finding the litttttle tiny Bantam eggs. :] You make me miss them, we only have our one male left nowadays, he's very old. My parents don't want to keep chickens anymore, so no more babies and eggs. I LOVE how dark the yolks are in farm eggs, they're so good.
also, if you used to buy eggs, not sure if you saved the cartons or not.. but old egg cartons are great for storing them. funny how containers designed for holding eggs are good at holding eggs.
And if you eventually start getting overrun with eggs, you can probably find a farmers market to sell overstock eggs to.

*Nods* I've got a few half cartons I saved up as planters.
I don't think we'll get overrun until they get a little older. Right now the average is 1 egg a day. And my poor polish only make eggs the size of a quarter!
But yes, I could probably give the overstock away, this area is on eof the biggest egg prodeucers in Maryland.

BRAVO to a new chicken owner!! knowing where your food comes from is pretty much the best thing ever. I've got eggs comin' out of my ears from my flock, it's that time of year! my favorite eggs come from my americaunas who lay the most beautiful sea-foam colored eggs... I miss my old welsummer hens who would lay deep mahogany brown eggs. good luck w/ your girls!!
heck yea!! i garden in the beds around the outside of my house, I grew a bunch of cabbage, potatoes, broccoli and herbs and sweet peas last year. ma has a huge organic garden down the road so I get fresh stuff whenever it's in season. fun stuff! I keep long tailed chickens (phoenix and cubalayas) right now and I love them!
Our chickens are laying eggs as well and I've noticed at least three different kinds of eggs that they lay. We also have a rooster that is in the chicken pen and another that found its way to our house that is absolutely beautiful, but does not like to get in the pen....he just stays outside. x3
Hopefully I'll be able to order some more when they come back into season <3 Only three out of the twelve I ordered were fertile and hatched, and tow died from the heat lamp being not enough, which I found out too late ><
And I will be enjoying those eggs. If I can get to them before my Uncle XD
