Cant you adjust the contrast of your scanner? I have a PhotoStudio 5.5 scanner and I just click on the wand once the scan's done and adjust the contrast to make all the pencil darker.....

or... instead of that, you could try sketching with a thicker pencil.. like a 3B or 5B
