I'd say the key to practicing cartoon expressions in my experience is observation and exaggeration. I recommend working with a reference image (which can be as simple as a selfie) and noticing how the facial muscles move and push and pull on each other when you or someone makes a certain face! And you can doodle these expressions from reference in any style you prefer. The reference is there as a guide, not to lock you into realism. And as you build your observation skills, you can exaggerate things a bit more than they are in life to increase the cartoony appeal. You can also continue to look at other artists' work as you build what you enjoy doing best for expressions in your art.

I will definitely keep this in mind! [i'm stubborn very stubborn when it comes to using references of any kind X'D not cus they're bad, but i just hate trying to try it?? i guess it spans with the something new ideal. I struggle with big or direct changes. I need to work on this lmao.
