And hey, look, it's a side character! The back of one's head, anyway. But more of Adam has been visible around here before.

It's hard to tell with his ears not being visible, but the guy standing to Adam's right(and the owl's left) is a bear.

Simple. These are people, not animals. Sarah is a person-who-happens-to-be-an-implala and Max is a person-who-happens-to-be-a-smilodon. They have no relation beyond sharing an appearance to the corresponding animals; "impala" is used for Sarah's species in-world because they look similar enough to make it a useful shorthand.
I.C.Q.-verse just has animals as well as people. You've seen Mittens already; it's no more odd that Toni has a pet cat in-world than it would be in our world for, say, a black person to have a pet whose coat roughly matched his/her skintone. Some people choose to not eat animals matching their species, but that's more akin to vegetarianism than anti-cannibalism.
