Back in the early 1990s, a visitor from Germany (fairly rare in those days) brought over some merchandise from a Dutch show called Alfred J. Kwak by Hermann Van Veen. I was immediately taken with the expressive style and fine character designs, and thrilled when he later shipped us lushly painted books of Kwak's comic adventures.
Already a fan of British artists like Alan Davis and Brian Bolland, this started my hunt for and enjoyment of continental European funny animal and anthro comics. I'm really pleased that comics like Blacksad and Sillage are finally getting brought over and translated.
Now I'm finally getting to watch episodes in English, after all these years. Yay internet! Living in the future is great!
I did this little pic and put it on the inside front cover of my first Sampler, which started a little tradition: all my Samplers had duck fanart in that spot.

I had four of them, they stole me one with dark green cover. nevertheless, I remeber this duckie, loved the series. BTW, what is written below? My dutch is somewhere betweem 'haven't the slighest idea of what it says'and "Open to conjectures' Mr. Lyzozyme gave me those saplers as a gift and always have admired your vesratility of topics and great execution,
Alfred J Kwak...oh the Memories.
That show was something else...it started so cute
and sweet...a little slapstick, a mean Bully Alfred needed to
overcome without being mean himself...
And then the PLOT started. And from then on it became
different. Gritty stuff right in the open. A bit softened for kids but
still, the Themes it took up were quite risky still at the time.
Whale-Catching, Doping, Racism...everything had it's part.
The most remembered Part for me was about Kra (The Bully) when he
was an Adult...he formed the "Krähenpartei" and tried to get to Power...at
which he succeeded for a time. Just look at the guy..so charismatic:

Yeees, he is representing exactly who you think. At first I just liked the cute Characters...when I grew older
and understood all this..I grew to like it for the stories they told.
Everyone who hasn't given this a serious try...go ahead, it is cute, funny...and lays bare several problems that
are still not resolved.

I loved this show as a kid and even had a few radio play casettes. Childhood memories..
