Thanks to everyone who applied. All of the artwork was excellent and it was really tough to choose winners. x3 I will DEFINITELY be making another set, so do not panic if you didn't win this time around. More opportunities will come, I promise.
I've been finding a lot of Avy knock offs recently and, in retaliation, I made some hyena designs. One of the biggest excuse I get from people who copy my hyena characters is the idea that "well they look the same because all hyenas look the same"... and that makes me want to punch a baby. I have seen thousands of hyena designs probably that look nothing like Avy or Kagiso, and even I as a single person have made countless numbers of spotted hyenas (just spotted, I'm not even getting into the other sub species) that I feel look nothing like one another. I have at least 4- possibly 5 hyena characters by myself whom are all totally different, and I've adopted out probably twice as many.
It's so lazy to just say "well all hyenas look the same so I'm just gonna copy Avy because clearly she is what a real hyena looks like". Forget the fact that Avy's markings are not only particularly distinct but not even realistic to a spotted hyena- they were based off of a pit bull, not even the same kind of animal. I mean seriously.
Ugh. >< Anyway, I try not to worry about since there really isn't much I can do about it. So, rather than bitch and rant and rave at everyone, I just use it as inspiration.
So have some free yenas.
Basically, you have until the 16th of March (next wednesday) to draw them. Draw as many of them as you want however you want, and I'll decide who goes to whom just based on that. :3 Not gonna be too serious about it, since I'll most certainly be making more of these.
Left and right are spotted hyenas, middle one is intended to be a brown hyena design (though the lineart is a spotted hyena so you are welcome to make it a cross of some type).
Large copyrights are necessary since hyena characters are becoming quite popular among the less creative crowds, so I've had serious issues with people stealing my designs and re-posting them. Silly bitches.

Yup. :3 I'm giving applicants total free reign on how they want to approach this. Can be traditional art, digital, sketches, lineart, whatever. I'll mostly be looking at the character and how it is handled but, that could be in a written bio or just how they are depicted in the image (doing something interesting, showing a lot of personality for example, or even if it's an actual ref sheet, whatever). I'm trying to be really chill about this. x3

sorry for having a stroke, I just don't know what came over me but i think I'm OK now. first off let me say your designs are awesome, also I understand what your saying. There have been SOOOO many times I seen other people's hyena designs and thought they where you, I'm looking up hyenas on DA right now and I can't tell the difference. Now here is the BUT because I am not sure who was the pioneer in the situathion who thought that giving hyenas a punk look would be cool BUT this is what i do know.

With that said i am NOT saying you copied anyone BUT what i will say that most people who do hyena designs often do so with the ones from lion king in mind. People have been taking those characters and changing the color of there hair ever sense lion king came out and most hyenas including yours resemble them more then anything.
so all i am getting at is that MAYBE just maybe this time people where not so much copying you BUT copying a character that yours just so happen to look like i mean seriously your main red hair hyena even has the same front hair bangs as the one from lion king.

Ahh see but that is exactly what I am trying to disprove here. None of my characters look anything like that bitch in the middle short of features that are common to all spotted hyenas. All of my characters have spots and dark legs because that is what spotted hyenas generally look like and, short of those similarities, my characters, style of drawing and just every aspect of my hyena designs varies greatly from the lion king style. It's infinitely more complex and in a lot of ways a hundred times more accurate- all of my characters have the dark muzzles and faces that hyenas are SUPPOSED to have, but many tlk hyenas lack due to being based off of Disney's terrible rendition of the species.
But, be that as it may, I would never sit here and say that I am claiming every single hyena character ever to have been copied from me specifically. >.> Those handful that you mentioned that are identical to Avy are the only ones I am referring to. The ones that happen to be brown, with swooping camouflage markings and v's on their chests, and who just so happen to wear hats all of the time, just so happen to be dark brown and just so happen to have white toes.
And don't read between the lines here. x3 Not at all trying to say that anyone whose character has white toes or a v on the chest is OMG ART THEFT HOW DARE U. Character design is a combination of traits. And when the vast majority of those traits are the same as a not realistic design I've made, and the perpetrator just so happens to be someone who has followed my artwork for months (usually they are, these people are not very subtle/secretive x3), the evidence just mounts against them.

true, i was going off of memory but your character but now that I look at it the spot design and style are completely different from that bitch from lion king. but I have notice the your hyena clone problem ever since i first came by you on DA and it simple fallowed you here. it epically happens here a lot and it is common for people to copy other people's designs and styles. all the Club Strip rip offs is enough to prove how uncreative people are on FA and that is why i will never post shit here. you simply fell victim to a common problem in the fur fandom.
it is a habit that originally came from recolor fags who simple evolved a little. they still lack the ability to be creative but they are just enough skill and brain cells to copy other people work and make a few changes in order to doge a bullet. It happens soooo much that people simply stop giving a damn. I hate to see shit like this happen to good artiest but at the same time i wish people will understand why it doesn't matter. people can copy you all they want but they can't copy the most important thing and that is your vision. it's like a finger print and none of them are the same, vision is what apply depth and meaning to our work and that is a skill earned from experience and no one can take that from you.
the experience in your work stands out from all the other copy cats, your work as depth and meaning behind it unlike most of the sallow work here that goes no further then sex. sure you are... seriously I thought your reef sheet was a commission from Avyris at first. lots of stuff in your gallery gives me this Avyris feel and i could not for the life of me figure out why at first because design wise they look different but they still look like she have have drew them. then i notice how much your line work resembled Avyris. it is no where near as detailed but the way you draw your fur and hair had me tripping balls. I assumed i was only thinking that because they where the same color but I can clearly see it in your line work.

Well, let me point out that I'm not ACTIVELY trying to immitate a way of drawing...and, honestly, the way I draw Hyena fur is more inspired by Freakzter than anything else.

And I'm by no means a 'great' artist...I doodle, and occasionally color, my work...I never do anything polished or professional looking...Just a quick doodle with some color thrown on.

well i never said you where imitating her style, all i was saying is that you style looks a lot like hers. lol and i totally agree with you on how a lot of people draw the same way and even think of the same designs, i got into an argument with avyris over that and how all people are inspired by something even her so no one can call anyone out for doing so because there is nothing wrong with it. i wish she would have your understanding in that aspect, in you fallow avyris then you already know she has the habit of getting like this.

Everyone copies someone at some point. Not directly, but maybe a stylistic aspect. Like how they draw hair, or eyes, or legs, or whatever....and in the furry community, its becoming increasingly difficult to be truely unique.
The way I keep my characters unique is in the details. No other hyenas have the same ear-tears or blue skin (that I know of)...or missmatched cyan eyes.
And, yeah, for a while I tried copying Freakzter's style, but then I got too frustrated with it and went with my own way of drawing.

yeah I feel ya but i just don't understand why people care sooo much about look unique instead of BEING unique. this is why i like sheer because he always come up with unique back stories and personalities for his characters. it really makes them more 3 dimensional because really everyone's appearance is generic in in some aspect

These all look wonderful! ... but what are the rules with adoption? Can we turn them into anthros or werehyenas (thus having a human form), modify them if we so chose, put accessories on them, or even scars, make them miss a limb or something. If we do win them will they become ours? Will we be able to use and/or be able to modify them? What are your conditions? I want to know before I decide if I wish to try out for them since they look so awesome!
