Commissioned by
puddleofsky, this marks the first full-color rendition of her OC Selah, as well as her debut in the Mud Scouts, an entity whose purpose for the uninitiated (since it's been so long since I started drawing these portraits :D ) is to "boldy go forth into grounds of questionable solidity", meaning they explore and map out wetlands and other muddy places and rating how difficult it is to traverse them.
The idea behind this series is that I'd produce one clean image of each recruit in their clean uniform, and following ones would feature them doing their thing, registering varying degrees of dirtiness, ranging from just their shoes to hopelessly mired and relying on their fellow troopmates to rescue them, an operation that may or may not devolve into a messy fiasco. Only thing keeping you from seeing on maneuvers (assuming you're into that sort of thing) is my lack of speed in turning out artwork, 'cause of other demands on my time, competing art projects/commissions (and time-management skills that are a touch faulty). But I haven't forgotten them, and they'll see the light of day...or at least your monitor.
Technical:
Well, this isn't quite the first rendition of this character...there is this sketch version that was whipped up back in July that formed the basis for this pic. I made a few adjustments in the pose which you can see if you flip back and forth, then went into crafting the backdrop. Since this one is a commission, I did extra detail in the backdrop using textured brushes for the closest trees and grasses. Another visual update is the transition from grass to muddy ground, giving the appearance that the grasses get regularly submerged right at the edge as the ground becomes wetter and wetter. Where Selah is standng is fairly solid, but places appropriate for Mud Scout exploration are implied to lie nearby.

I like to think that thick-bottomed maryjanes elevate their tops above the shallow mud, but readily slide through when the depth swamps them. Not all mudscout excursions will result in deep sinkage, so these are enough to keep you above it till its deep enough to be worth getting dirty.
Previously undefined, but fairly recently it was decided to standardize on a certain variety of maryane shoes.
Go to Aliexpress, and search the term "lolita maryjane". The black patent-leather versions with about 2" thick lug soles are the ones being referenced in the pic.

I can attest to the shoe’s ability to hold fast while adhered snugly to your feet. I n many of the mud types I have encountered that they tend to stay on perfectly!
Railride; I have looked and looked for this skirt design and I am just not finding it! I love the deep v yoke high-waist belted design. I know you use references for shoe designs, but do you have a reference for this skirt pattern??

That's a good question. I looked at the earliest references in my archives,
preppymarshmousee's drawings from her pre-2000 website, and their skirts had pleats running all the way to the waistband. I'm not sure where the v-yoke came from, and the earliest pic I have of the uniform, " Mud Scout Cosplay from 2008, has it. I may have just freelanced the design.

Well foo. I've looked around various clothing outlets and nope, no find. Soooo this is your design-ish. Is the v-yoke on the backside too??? I'm thinking I might have to do this in fabric sometime when I get the time (oh gosh free time, whats that?!?) I could think that this style would give the skirt more of a natural flare around the legs and hips perhaps, and leading lines with the v-yoke. Totally making me curious right here!!!
Y'know, after thinking about it, I don't think I've ever depicted a Mud Scout uniform from behind. I'm going to say the skirt duplicates it's front appearance with the same depth of yoke. It would simplify placement of the tail accommodation and implied rear closure to have it in the middle of such a feature.
I looked at pretty much all your various pictures and never saw it.
So, thats it, sometime this summer I'm gonna have to make one, with a tail catch and everything. I will let ya know how that adventure goes when I get that far.
I know its a little thing, but Fur-gonomics and how a form interacts with its attire and surroundings has always fascinated me.
