I don't know the exact incident that lead to Miles unlocking his Umbreon form, but I know what ultimately triggered it was Miles accepting his own desires and needs and wants as being okay to desire and need and want - basically, he maxed his Friendship meter with himself.

In Umbreon form, Miles fights like... a ninja, and a lot of dark type moves.
