Kudan is a relatively late character in Japanese folklore. The first mentions of it in written sources date back to the 19th century. According to beliefs, Kudan was a calf with a human face, which, in the first few days after its birth, made one or several prophecies and then died immediately. Typically, Kudan predicted droughts, famine, or other calamities, but there are also mentions of it predicting Japan's defeat in World War II.
