COMMISSION NOTES
Kialra asked me a question about how I chose the color palette on my last posting. I gave the best answer that I could, but I still gave an incomplete answer.
I wanted to add that I enjoy subtle colors. I like the sense that any color could exist in a given scene, as long as none of those colors overpower each other. They're called color "harmonies" because they work well together. So I like surprising color harmonies. It's a little difficult to have a formal definition of what I like, since a surprise is something you can't really know about beforehand.
I really felt like I had turned a corner with this one. And I really wanted to post it. That's why I looked with dismay when I realized I had a 9 month backlog of unposted commissions. Now it's down to four months. I'm so proud.
One more note about color. I do not select a palette beforehand. Not really. I lay down a color wash to get a sense of the mood I want to go for, then complementary colors help break up the monotony of the single color. Then I add whatever colors are necessary for the scene, maybe even unnecessary ones.
It's a bit difficult to explain in text. A color wash, for example, isn't usually a uniform color. I also have to add that you can never say too much about having good values. Not moral values, mind you, I mean lights and darks. Go ahead and be evil >:D.
I should probably do a screen capture one day--that'll help explain more thoroughly.
