They are trying that. The new T-bird looks similar to the 55's. Mustang looks like the late 60's, as does the new Camaro. The Chevy SSR looks like a 53 pickup hot rod. The HHR looks like a 40's panel truck or suburban. The challenger concept looks almost exactly like the 71' model. And your right, except for the performance, they're not. No chrome, no wild colors or two tone paint.
First off I will say that a 2 by 3 foot sized picture of a night scene is hard enough to manage. I tried acrylics a while back and they were a pain in the ass, took forever to get the right color mixes compared to the watercolor penicls I currently use. That you did this in such a big size and with acylics must have taken a very long time.
If I tried doing something similar in that size it would be several weeks to a couple of months. I would charge well into 4 digit range for something this detailed and would not be able to get it anywhere near this good if I tried using acrylics, good on you for doing something technical and damn hard and pulling it off.

Thanks very much =). It does take a lot of patience... I did many of the parts wrong the first time, and painted over them again until I was happy with them.. I did the drawing actually sometime last year - but decided to finally paint it a couple weeks ago, and its taken about two weeks to paint, many 10+ hour working days. Its a good exercise for me, and I learned a lot about that bridge in the process =)
Haha yay Carmen Sandiego. I played that game on the Mac, so it was probably different, but thats funny. The hill the car is on is Sausalito.
I actually watched Pixar's "Cars" again for inspiration on how to color the car, which I had no reference for the lighting.. and the big thing I learned was to make it *shiny*

All the leaves are brown - All the leaves are brown
And the sky is gray - And the sky is gray
I've been for a walk - I've been for a walk
On a winter's day - On a winter's day
I'd be safe and warm - I'd be safe and warm
If I was in L.A. - If I was in L.A.
California dreaming - California dreaming
On such a winter's day
Stopped into a church
I passed along the way
Well, I got down on my knees - Got down on my knees
And I pretend to pray - I pretend to pray
You know the preacher likes the cold - Preacher likes the cold
He knows I'm gonna stay - Knows I'm gonna stay
California dreaming - California dreaming
On such a winter's day
Awesome picture kacey and a great song.

excellent work, kacey! this is most definately a fine work of art and i'd imagine quite a show-piece too! i really love the bridge detail you have there, quite straight lines and the whole structure really glows quite nicely with the lights illuminating it. ^..^ ... even all the way back into the horizon!
you've put a great deal of effort into this picture and it shows! this is most definately a piece i'd love to hang in my gallery, and were finances available to do so, i most certainly would try... or at least a print ;)
keep up the great work, kacey, you're obviously improving all the time and proving to the rest of us that there's still room at the top to always get even better! ^..~

I don't coment often but this piece, I have to, is absolutely gorgeous. The colours, lighting, reflections, shadows all form such and absolutely stunning image. I definitely have to say this is one of my favourites of your work (:
I also love the water. Relatively simple so it doesnt distract fom the rest of the painting, but also incredibly effective. The detail of rivets on the pilings are an awesome thing, I must say. The sky gives it a wonderful atmosphere. <3
Sorry for the kinda long comment, I just couldn't go without saying that XD

I linked to this on one of the boards I hang out on to show the awesome art.
One person, it was a furry board, commented - "WOW!
Not exactly furry, but still WOW!"
My reply was - "I don't know about that.
Depends on who's in the car. Gee, can you do it in a '57 T-Bird?

Note: The last artwork is done by a friend of mine - http://www.furaffinity.net/user/cirrel/
But if fit so well I could not help myself.
