The crew found them on an abandoned moon, possibly being 200 years old since it was a very early design of Y Robotics which was forced to shut down 150 years ago due to the threat of a robot rebellion.
Many robots that exist nowadays are just as intelligent as any other sapient species, however bloonbot's intelligence is more akin to a dog. They understand some language, though cannot speak apart from the occasional beeps and boops.
Nix was the one who repaired them back to working order and found that they were full of personality. They are very loyal, though sneaky sometimes. They love colours, especially blue, so the crew gets them lots of childs toys and media to play around with. CASI (ship AI) is able to transfer herself into the bloonbot at will and communicate to the crew for great distances away from the ship.
They run on 4 rechargeable ion batteries, which Nix made a charging station for so that they can fly over to it and sit on it to charge their battery.
They fly by means of magnetic force and are very mobile on board ships and planets with magnetospheres. They are unable to fly on planets with no magnetosphere so the crew made a harness to carry them in when that happens (think like a baby carrier).
In the early days of their new life, the crew found them often scratching at their doors as they cannot trigger the sensors for some reason, so Amber went around making bloonbot sized holes in the ship so they can fly freely throughout without getting stuck.
They run very cold and are attracted to warm sources which seem to dull their sensors (they get high off of heat), so they love the lounge where they can sit by the oven, on someone's lap, or in laundry baskets.
