Based on the cryptic comparison to a princess two pages ago my theory is that it is a balance thing. that the higher the capacity for suffering the hero can endure, the more can be spared elsewhere. So it always have to be the weakest with the biggest hearts who will suffer the most, that have to do the job.
force him to die over and over, remembering each one and the pain of it. this is one cruel way to beat that dragon king on both sides. a hero who can't suffer more then he already has forced to fight until he wins. a true video game protaganist lifestyle with the Demon being a player in his world quicksaving and loading until he gets that true ending. in all too famous words "You've met a Terrible Fate, Havent You?"
