A group photo of Charlie Squad, dated to April 6, 2002, taken at Santego Military Base in Arizona. On May 16, 2003, they along with the rest of their battalion were deployed to the Black Mesa Research Facility responding to a reported outbreak. Out of the 13 Marines in the squad, only 3: Cpl Kurt Kiens, PFC Eric Wester, and PFC Hek'lon Maril, would end up making it out of the facility alive...
Throughout the 7 Hour War and during his days as commander of the "Green Devils" Resistance organization, Kurt would carry this photo with him in his jacket pocket, close to his heart. Although he never had time to truly process the disaster at Black Mesa between the even more brutal Combine Invasion and leading a resistance movement, and thus still struggles with untreated PTSD, he finds comfort in the photo, a reminder of better times.

Exactly. They'd throw or launch grenades to flush you out of cover, try and force you into open sightlines, laid good ambushes even if some were scripted, and they also would withdraw when wounded, limping away to safety. That was one of my biggest disappointments with Black Mesa's HECU (along with the more modern "tacticool" aesthetic that imo just didn't fit their vibe. First mod I got was one that made them look more like the classic HECU). They were a lot more simple to fight and a lot less badass, especially with their voices. However, I very much enjoyed the extra character Black Mesa gave the HECU in the form of the extra conversations and radio messages you'd overhear. Half Life's aesthetic+behaviour with Black Mesa's added characterization would make the perfect HECU.
