He mostly willingly became undead
Some necromancers have a charm that will bring them back after death, only problem is the body retains the damage that killed them, such as Al having no skin on his face, exposed jaw bone, rest of it being bandaged, likely an explosion or some blast of fire is what took him out, directly to the head
