Before I started the Rackenroon story, Carry On was a gag-a-day office comedy about a group of scavengers who worked for a New Yak City newspaper. Kathy was a reporter, but mainly she wrote obituaries. Her childhood friend Scooter, a near-sighted tiger, was the staff artist, and the cartoonist of "Pepe the Fire Ant." Kathy was probably Pepe's biggest--if not only--fan.
I hadn't tried creating Scooter in Hero Forge previously because the feline face they have is simply ghastly. If you don't want a mane, it looks smoothly bald, and there really aren't many good hair tufts or cheek ruffs.
I managed to tone down the lantern jaw on the face by increasing its softness, and being able to layer three different markings decals on the face--and painting over the nose stripe to make it invisible--really helped. He's not "strip accurate" but he's at least somewhat recognizable.
They now have writing and illustration decals for the books; while I don't show it here, Scooter is drawing a sketch of some trees in his sketchbook.
I gave Kathy a different tail in this one--the "boar tail" option, which looks closer to the way I used to draw her tail when I first started the strip.

I regret not putting the Die Veldt staff into the Rackenroon arc; I had planned to, but when I thought about having all those extra people to write for, I decided to have Fred hustle Kathy and Sandy out under the cover of darkness instead.
I also had nothing for Kathy's parents to be doing. This is a story of Kathy's journey, and if Fisi and Penny were along, they'd run the show and make it too easy for her. I had to kill off Trader Horn at one point because he was too competent a character.
I feel that characters need to be challenged by the plot, and to be vulnerable, otherwise there's no real triumph when they overcome stuff. Characters who are too smart, too powerful, too well-equipped...how can readers feel worried about them?
And if I had Kathy's co-workers and family along--even if they show up for the wedding--that's another ten or twelve characters I have to write into the story, and it's already bloody topheavy as it is.
So I had to make up some gobbledegook about how it was illegal/against tradition/not allowed for the family to be present. Even if they really should be there, I just haven't got anything for them to do, which wouldn't end up complicating the plot in ways I don't need it complicated.

(Chuckles.) Yeah. I was working with a friend on a "Furry" comic about a newspaper run by Anthropomorphic animals way back in the early 1990s, but I only had ONE good gag, and it fell apart. I'm always impressed with the way you can get that Heroforge program to get up and "Dance" for you. And if you don't mind... You and your strip have taught me more about Hyena tails than most of the online nature sites.
