So in the comics.
Applejack became the provider in means of food. She did all the cooking and made sure supplies were up.
and i know. She's carrying a basket of oranges, such a sin!
BUT! Oranges, Limes, and any other citrus fruit, were used to keep Scurvy at bay, which was normally caught while as sea.
