Other IO psychologists and recruiters I have spoken to dislike cover letters. They can be difficult to assess systematically, because of their free-form nature, and they are seldom able to justify removing a structured question from an interview. Also, they make the application stack just that much bigger, slowing down the work of resume reviewers.
