These mutants were born from a secret Cold War program called “Project Moreau”. Using a serum derived from a rare parasitic organism that “speeds up evolution”, various animals were experimented on in order to create the ultimate super soldier.

Initially, the project was a success. It created mutant super soldiers that had greater reflexes, strength, speed, and agility than any of the best human soldiers. However, the scientists discovered a terrible side effect; the serum was highly addictive.

Withdrawal from the serum caused excruciating joint and muscle pain, aggression, and delirium. Too little of a dosage would do nothing to stop withdrawal symptoms, too much would further mutation and make the subject more uncontrollable and more dangerous.

Scientists were able to control the subjects at the start through a set of protocols that minimized the chance of serum addiction, but as the military demands of the project expanded, these protocols were abandoned, to disastrous results.
