CHAPTER 18
At Rena's house, Holly Skunktaur was up early. Hy went to Rena and Hesper's room to check that they were awake.
"Mom, dad... Sorry about last night" Said the young skunk peeking out the door.
"Holly! Are you alright honey?" Said Hesper still lethargic.
"Yes Dad. I'm fine. I already had breakfast. I want to go out and have fun"
“Holly, daughter… what happened?” Rena asked suddenly, sitting up.
"I'm fine mom. I need to go for a walk. Teo and Cora are still asleep."
Rena and Hesper looked at each other. Then Rena got up and gave hys daughter a tight hug.
“Oh my little one. You gave us quite a scare last night. Tell me, what happened. Did you feel the thoughts of someone close? Any chakat friends from school?
"No mom. Yesterday, on the beach, during the volleyball game. I saw how someone was hurt and I could clearly feel that person's anguish… And last night… I don't know. I sensed something that scared me. I just want to make sure she's okay."
“Holly! Is it someone you know?"
“N… No… I've never seen her before. But I think Regthar knows her."
Rena and Hesper looked at each other again. Rena recognized that Holly's concern was the same as hys concern for Esteban and others in hys family.
"Holly, honey. What are you going to do?" Hesper asked suddenly.
"Well I…"
Holly. If it makes you feel better. Go and make sure that person is okay. Just don't come back late and let us know if something happens” Rena said suddenly.
"Thank you for trusting me, mom!" Holly exclaimed happily, then left the house. Hesper, who had recently returned from his long journey to the new Vika-B system, showed some concern.
"Do you think it's wise to leave hym alone in this?"
"Dear. I've been closer to Holly lately than you. I know it's not your fault, because of your job, but I've seen how our Holly has grown. And I think it's time for hym to face the consequences of hys abilities hymself."
“Hmmm…”
"Don't worry, Hesper. Trust hym"
"Ok. If you say so Rena…” The male skunktaur declared with a resigned sigh.
“[It's been a long time, Sorah. Aren't you going to open the doors for your father?]” Avik said in the Marlock language.
"[It's just... I really didn't expect to see you, dad]" The female replied, still surprised. The male, however, rushed towards her and gave her a warm hug. Sorah could feel, after several years, the scent and warmth of her father's skin, with whom she had been raised since childhood in Grom.
"[Eh... Please, go ahead dad... You too sir...]"
"[This is Droquen Ulroch, my assistant]"
"[It's a pleasure...]" Droquen said, waving his hand. They both entered the living room while Sorah hurried-and concerned-to the bedroom to tell Regthar. However, the Renzar was already up, wearing only underwear. Carrying Hajo in his arms, the male peeked into the living room asking what was wrong. Seeing Avik, he stopped in disbelief.
“[Hmm… Regthar Sivem]” Said the tabby-furred Renzar who was dressed elegantly for the occasion.
"[You, here?... After what you said to me that time?]" Regthar growled, confused, remembering the last time they had seen each other in Grom.
"[I'm not here for you, but for Sorah and my grandson... Which I see... It's... Very cute]"
"Regthar, love, give me Hajo" Sorah said suddenly approaching him. Regthar, deeply upset by the unexpected visit from his mother-in-law, handed Hajo over to his wife, while he returned to the bedroom.
"Sorah, let me know when he's gone!" He grumbled before walking off. Sorah, a bit annoyed, introduced Hajo to her father. The boy was looking at him with a curious little face. Avik brimmed with pride watching him.
“[Look Droquen. The boy got the black fur from his grandmother. He looks a bit like you. Luckily he didn't pull the father's fur off of him hehe hehe] ”
“[Dad, please don't start]” Sorah said pleadingly, at the prospect of another family argument like the old ones. Hajo stretched out her little hands and allowed herself to be caressed and kissed by her grandfather.
"[It's beautiful, Sorah... It reminds me of Varta]"
"[Yes, I know. And have you talked to her lately?]”
“[Oh, please Sorah. I'm not going to lower myself to talk to your mother Grrr]"
"[Dad, because everything for you is a humiliation]" Sorah said.
“[Varta doesn't deserve the slightest bit of attention from me... Or from you. You shouldn't worry about her]” Old Renzar sentenced. Hajo playfully tugged at his braided beard, and curiously explored his ears and mouth. At that moment, Esteban, along with Lilethe and Doren, appeared in the room, unaware of what was happening.
[Wow, Sorah, I didn't know you had visitors] Avik said as he saw the human and the skunktaurs.
Sorah, somewhat nervous, hurried to introduce those present.
“Esteban, Lilethe, Doren. This is my father, Avik Grovem. Dad, these are my children Esteban and Lilethe. Doren is the third member of the clan. The skunktaurs and Esteban were surprised by the news. Esteban, excited, approached the Renzar to shake his hand, but Avik ignored him and asked Sorah what it all meant, in the Marlock language. Lilethe, with her abilities, immediately caught the negative emotions towards them from the old man. Doren stood impassive trying to understand what was happening.
“[It is as you hear it, father. They are my children too]” insisted Sorah
“[Grrr… Are you telling me that you adopted these strange creatures? They are part of your family?]”
"[That's right dad]"
"[Sorah please! Did you go crazy? It is true that adoption is a tradition of our species, but it does not apply to aliens]"
“[I don't see anything wrong with that]” Sorah replied.
“[I didn't think the death of my grandson Tanyio affected you so much, to the point of surrounding yourself with strange creatures]” Avik said with a frown.
“[Dad, it hurts me that you talk like that. They are my family and I love them very much].” Sorah replied, her chest heaving with anguish. Lilethe immediately sensed her mother's emotions. Hy walked over to her and took her hand.
“Grrr…Enough is enough! Get out of my house!" Regthar exclaimed, reappearing in the room.
"You put those ideas into my daughter's head, didn't you?" Avik replied defiantly.
“Doren, take Hajo and everyone go inside. Everybody!" Regthar ordered decisively. The skunktaur nodded and with a nimble movement, hy made the baby Renzar fly from Avik's hands to hym with ease.
[“By Grom, what is this!”] The Renzar exclaimed in surprise. Droquen, like a good bodyguard, approached his boss from behind.
[“Grrr… Who do you think you are to come to my house and insult my family”] Regthar roared as he approached Avik. At that moment, Droquen intervened between them.
[“Tell your “terak” to get off me”] Regthar growled. The tension between the two males was extreme.
"Stop! Regthar!… Sorah said suddenly. ["Dad! My husband is right. You have no right to question what I do with my life!”]
"[I don't have it? Grrr… I tried hard to give you a good life, which you threw away for this idiot!]
“[But it wasn't the life I wanted for myself!”] Sorah replied with tears in her eyes.
"It's enough! Regthar said before throwing a punch at Avik. However, Droquen deftly blocked it, capturing the brown Renzar's arm. Then both began to struggle. Regthar with all his strength pushed him out into the garden. Once outside, Regthar attacked him with Khudok's blows, but was helpless against Grom's trained police academy guard, who easily subdued him, forcing him to the ground.
“Grrr! Let me go!"
“I suggest you stop moving. I don't want to break your arm” Droquen said coldly.
"Stop!!" Sorah roared, facing her father. This one, who seemed to enjoy how his assistant forcibly subdued his son-in-law, made a sign for him to let go. Esteban, surprised and confused, faced the dark-furred Renzar, giving him a push, although he didn't move him an inch.
"Leave my father alone!" The human exclaimed loudly. Droquen heeded Avik's command and released Regthar.
"Please stop!" Lilethe pleaded. Regthar rose from the floor roaring, and Esteban clung to him to prevent him from attacking Droquen again.
“[You haven't changed a bit Regthar Sivem. You're still the same wild Renzar of old. I don't know why I'm surprised]” Avik sneered.
“[Dad, get out of here please!]” Sorah finally roared. Shaking his head, Avik ordered Droquen to follow him. In the street, a private transport waited for them. After boarding the vehicle, it left for the center of the city. Regthar, still chewing his anger, approached Sorah. But she, avoiding everyone, began to run into the house, crying. Esteban, still shocked by what had just happened, looked at Regthar anxiously. The Renzar, only managed to ruffle the boy's hair, before going out into the street, head down.
Lilethe, perceiving the state of anguish of both Renzar, approached Esteban and said:
“Go with dad. I'll stay with Sorah. Doren will take care of Hajo”
"Okay" Esteban answered with a sigh, after which he went out into the street after him.
Chakastra rose high in the sky. Regthar still chewed his rage, bellowing epithets in the Marlock language of Grom. From time to time he would grab his head and punch the walls. The human didn't remember seeing him so angry. His attitude gave him a slight chill as he remembered Brend's fury when he attacked him. However, the boy did not want to leave Regthar alone at such a difficult time. He felt an obligation to return his hand after all the Renzar had done for him. After slowly catching up with him from behind. Esteban declared.
"Hey… I'm really sorry about all this."
"Grrr... Esteban... He has no right to come here and talk to us like he did. Believe me he would have beaten him out, if it wasn't for the terak who was with him... Grrr."
"I get it Regt. The guy seems to be a real pain in the ass, from what I heard. But still, he's Sorah's father. Like it or not."
"Grrr... I know by Grom!... I let myself be provoked... But you don't know him. He's always been contemptuous of me. He's never accepted me. And after so long, he still thinks I'm not the best thing for Sorah"
"Hey, calm down... What he thinks of you is his problem, not yours" Esteban said, taking one of her hands. Then he added.
"On Earth, there is the myth of the princess and the dragon"
"Princess and the Dragon? What is that?" Regt said without much enthusiasm.
"Sit down with me for a moment and I'll tell you"
"Son, excuse me, but I'm not in the mood to talk...I need to...Distract my head for a while..."
"Okay. I'll accompany you then. I also usually walk or jog when I'm tense. And that helps a lot" The human hastened to say.
"Uh?.. But Sorah... She must hate me for this. I'm an idiot..."
"Don't worry about her. She's with the skunktaurs. Although we don't understand the Marlock language, Lilethe realized everything that happened. Mama bear and you need to relax... Let's go"
"I… I'm sorry, kid. I don't want you to think I'm a savage…"
"Heh heh heh... You're wild enough to defend me and my skunktaurs. Thank you for that" Esteban said.
They both walked down the avenue side by side. Regthar took long steps, forgetting that the human, being smaller, had to make a great effort to keep up with him. Renzar lost in thoughts of him, he relived every word old Avik had said to him. Esteban, to distract him, told him about anything, but Regthar continued with a serious face. After advancing down the street, Esteban saw the subway station. Then an idea crossed his mind.
"Dad. I'll buy you a drink at Lorel's bar"
"Huh? A drink?" She responded to the renzar as if waking up from a trance.
"Yes, at Lorel's bar. Where Doren works"
"Hmmm... And they serve Grom's liquor there?"
"Of course! Lorel always has the best of the Federation on her menu. What do you say?"
"Grrr...Okay. I think it'll do me good. Let's go." Regthar answered with some reluctance.
