Commission for
frozenfire60
Characters: Azrien (big guy/master) and Ts'iri'three (smaller fella/student)
COMMISSION NOTES
- One of Stephen Sondheim's (may he rest in peace) little artistic saws was: Content Dictates Form. That's sure what happpened in this drawing. Normally I would make a straight illustration, but portraying the idea--master wizard and his clutzy apprentice (perhaps performing a ritual)--seemed to require a story that moved in time. I had to show the master succeeding, and the student failing. If I had only showed the outcome of Azrien and Tsiri's spells (by, for example, removing the bit in the middle of Tsiri trying to cast), I'm not sure that it would be clear that they were trying to do the same thing. The subject matter naturally suggested a kind of comic. Dividing into panels also allowed me the ability to show them both at a good scale.
- I'm happy with Tsiri's casting pose, I think it's a good indicator of his personality. Inspiration was Gurren Lagann.
- This was also a good chance to do a little FASHION
- This was also also a good chance to work on the birdset
