CHAPTER 5
After accommodating most of the passengers in their respective hotels, only Relia and the human visitor remained, who had sat in the last row aboard the vehicle. Upon reaching the lodge where the bear morph would spend her time in Amistad, Regthar kindly helped her down with her luggage.
"Thank you very much Mr. Regthar. You have been very kind in explaining to me the benefits of the city. And I will try to attend your tournament"
"You're welcome, Miss Relia. It was a pleasure. And if you go to the coliseum, you won't regret it hee hee..." The male replied while trying not to look at the female's cleavage, where two huge breasts peeked out. She coquettishly approached him and said goodbye with a surprise kiss on the cheek, the renzar couldn't help but blush.
"Believe me, the pleasure was all mine. I hope we see each other again, handsome" she pronounced, and then headed for the entrance of the lodging, a small building. Regt smiled nervously. As the female walked away from him, he could see her attractive curvaceous silhouette move from side to side as she walked. While she wasn't a renzar, her smaller form closely resembled it, showing that ground bear morphs had a special charm for renzar. Regt was admiring the beauty of that girl, when suddenly, a voice took him out of that trance.
"I understand that you might like her, Mr. Regthar, but I'm tired and would like to get to my hotel soon if it's not too much trouble."
The human sitting in the back of the vehicle was the last remaining passenger.
"Oh! Grr... For Grom! I'm so sorry sir. Excuse me. We're leaving right away" Regt said embarrassed, as he quickly got into the vehicle and started it up.
After advancing a few kilometers towards the lodging, the renzar expressed:
"And tell me, sir, where on Earth do you come from?" Regt asked curiously.
"From Peru. Do you know the terrestrial geography?" The man asked back, trying to test Regt.
"Of course, sir. That is in the great American continent. In the southern part"
"That's right" The passenger nodded.
"Heh heh heh. It's because of my work, I must know basic aspects of all the planets of the federation"
"I see"
"It's funny. More than a year ago, I also ran into a human boy who came from that part of America. From Valparaíso to be exact. He now lives in my house, can you believe it? Heh heh heh"
"That's further south" replied the man. After traveling a couple more kilometers, they finally arrived at the lodge. It was a small hostel located on the outskirts of the city. Once there, Regthar parked the vehicle and lowered the passenger's luggage.
"Well, we're here. Again I apologize for distracting me sir"
"Don't worry. I understand. Thanks for bringing me" The human said as he got out of the vehicle. Regthar noted that the man had a small medical life support unit attached to his body.
"Er... Do you need help sir?" he asked concerned. But the man turned and answered.
"You mean this? I don't know, worry. I've lived with these devices for many years in my body. I'll be fine, thanks" and then went inside the inn. Once at the entrance, the strange passenger stopped and turned to approach Regt again.
"Mr. Regthar, excuse my boldness, but can I have a word with you before you leave?"
The surprised renzar declared.
"Eh, yes of course, I'm here to serve you"
"I appreciate it" replied the human, inviting Regthar to follow him to the small lobby of the inn.
"This series of characters must be debugged. It is creating a conflict with the transmitting data terminal" Gerak-Nee said while analyzing the internal programming of one of the softwares.
"I have it" Esteban responded, while performing the operation on his computer.
"Done! Do the simulation again" He added
"Okay here we go" the rakshani said as he ran the simulation again. After a few minutes of waiting, Lorna, Esteban and Gerak watched the development of the test on the monitor with expectation. At the end, everyone breathed a sigh of relief, noticing that the software no longer had conflicts, being satisfactory.
"Way to go!" Lorna exclaimed as she high-fived Esteban and Gerak.
"I must admit, as loud as you two are, we make a good team" The Rakshani said as he leaned back in his seat, hands behind his head.
"What happens is that you are very serious Gerak-Nee" Esteban said smiling.
"Meh..."
"You remind me of a skunk I used to know"
"Hey, that software has many algorithms developed based on chakat parameters" Lorna added with a smile.
"Well, also the docking softwares were developed by humans" replied Esteban.
"Yeah, that's probably why they caused conflicts" Lorna said laughing.
"An accurate shot" Gerak-Nee commented pointing his biomechanical finger at Esteban's body.
"Hey Lorna, how cruel you are!" The human said a bit confused.
"It was just a joke"
"Yeah, I bet you thought it with your paws"
"Uh? .. Well, these legs beat any human foot in speed and dexterity"
"In sports?"
"Whatever! Do you want a race to the dining room?"
"No other thing"
"In everything, we would beat them"
"So you think?"
"Yeah!"
"Enough couple of scandalous" Gerak said suddenly standing up. "If you really want to stupidly prove which species is superior, why don't you compete in something that needs speed, dexterity and precision at the same time?" Lorna and Esteban looked at each other in silence for a moment. Then the chakat with a lit face exclaimed. ,"A Chakker Match!"
"That wouldn't be fair. That game is designed for chakats. It's as if I were proposing a soccer match" Esteban replied. After another moment of silence, they both said in unison "A game of Volleyball!"
"On the beach!" Esteban added
"In teams!" Lorna added.
"This weekend!"
"Excellent!" Players need to be recruited, Lorna said thoughtfully. "Maybe my parents could play"
"Eh? Your mother maybe, but your father is a huge chakat. Shi would give them too much of an advantage" Esteban protested. "Why don't you ask Lorel and Liner?"
"Hmmm... Okay, I'll leave dad out. Liner and Lorel would be fine... And that chakat friend of yours from the Federation"
"You mean Chakat Blackspots? Oh no... Shi must be too busy a guy to participate in something like that" Esteban said.
"What do you lose by asking hym? Are you scared?" Lorna said mockingly.
"Okay, I'll do it" answered Esteban resignedly.
"And out of curiosity, do you know any other humans who could be part of your team?" Gerak asked crossing his arms.
"Eh... Well... Mark!... Mark Sander... And his human wife Delfina" Esteban exclaimed, as if he had just discovered something important.
"You still lack players" Lorna said suddenly
"Hmmm... Maybe Mr. Travis. That would be four of us."
"That would be five with your friend Jhonny" added the Rakshani.
"Eh?.. But Jhonny lives in Kat'turna and has no plans to come soon" declared Esteban. "Unless… Lorna… What were you going to tell me this morning?"
"Uyyyy! Gerak-Nee! Why did you have to open your big mouth! It was a surprise!" Lorna exclaimed in a daze.
"Bah... He was going to find out anyway. There are only a couple of hours left for his arrival"
"Grrr... Gerak! This won't come for free! You'll have to be the judge of the match!
"Oh no...Don't bring me into this."
"Well you're in! Learn the rules!"
"Wait Lorna. Jhonny and Vera are coming to visit again?" Esteban asked excitedly.
"They don't come to visit, they come to stay! They will seek employment in Chakona!"
"Wow! And why didn't you tell me? What a joy!" Esteban exclaimed hugging Lorna.
"Jhonny told me to keep quiet. They wanted to surprise you. But our friend had to talk" Lorna said looking at Gerak out of the corner of her eye.
"Ah, never mind Lorna. The boys are back in Chakona! That's what's important." Esteban said. Then, turning to Gerak-Nee, he declared.
"You're right. There will be five of us. And Gerak, I ask you please to be the judge. You are neither chakat nor human. You will be a neutral judge. The rules are simple. Besides, it will be fun!"
"I do not know it..."
"Come on, cheer up!" Esteban said stretching out his hand towards the rakshani. Lorna, taking a few steps forward, declared. "Besides, it was your idea"
"Grrr... No... I already told you... Don't get me into your nonsense" He declared before leaving the room heading to the casino to have lunch.
"What happens with him?" Lorna asked intrigued.
"Don't worry. You have to give him time. I've dealt with people like him before" Esteban answered with a smile.
In Lorel's bar, the clientele enjoyed a quiet afternoon consuming aperitifs. The chakat had managed to expand the premises a bit to install a small stage, where local artists delighted customers with music. Doren continued serving diners, serving coffee, drinks, and various appetizers. Lorel at one point approached the skunktaur to speak privately.
"Doren, you know I don't like to meddle in the private affairs of my employees, but tell me, how are you and Esteban? He's my friend and I care"
"Oh, I know. He and I are doing very well. We agreed on a few things and, well, we've had several romantic evenings together, without Lilethe present. That has really strengthened our bond as a clan."
"Wow... That sounds wonderful Doren. I'm happy for both of you."
"If I'm part of this new clan alongside Lilethe, I guess I'll have to be more careful. Esteban isn't like Ugkar, who didn't much care who we hooked up with. Esteban is human. And his heart is fragile. He cares it affects what Lilethe and I do. And I don't want to hurt him. As you know, I really enjoy being with you and your clan. But I won't do it anymore. At least not without my clan's consent."
"That's fair, Doren. And you know, I'm glad you think so. Esteban is a fragile boy. The one time I was with him, I screwed up. I... I really wanted him to be with me and Liner.
"You still have feelings for him, don't you Lorel?" Doren asked suddenly. "Come on, I don't read minds like Lilethe, tell me" The chakat, faced with the unexpected question, sighed deeply and then nodded.
"Yes, Doren. When I saw him for the first time, sitting there, at that table, just... I was moved. It was something that I can't explain. Something unique. I approached and we talked. Then I invited him to my house. But I think that was my mistake. I rushed everything. I didn't know how to read his true feelings. I just thought of myself, like a predator worried only about not letting go of its prey. I was stupid... Then, seeing him suffer when he almost died ... I suffered with him... I cried helplessly...
"Lorel, I'm sorry... I was guilty of that too" Doren said sadly.
"That's over, Doren. You more than vindicated yourself... And now, you have the opportunity to make him happy... Take advantage of it... Protect Esteban's heart. Do for him what I couldn't. Because if he's happy I assure you that I am too..." Lorel concluded with tears in her eyes.
"Oh Lorel..." Doren said giving her a warm hug. Liner, sensing his emotions, walked over to them and hugged them as well. The afternoon was already entering the bay of Amistad, while the diners continued to enjoy the warm atmosphere that reigned there.
The arm chairs in the reception lobby were clearly not designed to support the weight of a renzar. So Regthar decided to remain standing, while the human accommodated himself with some difficulty in one of the seats.
“I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I stayed in this place because it is one of the cheapest in the city… I informed myself very well before traveling” Said the human trying to be cordial.
"Do not worry sir. I'm fine"
"Ok" The stranger said, then looked carefully at Regt.
"You mentioned that you have a human living in your house, didn't you?"
"Eh... Yes, indeed" The renzar answered a little surprised.
"And tell me, how is Esteban?"
Regthar's surprise was capitalized upon hearing that question. Suddenly, he had the feeling of being out of breath. Looking more closely at the man's wrinkled and somewhat gaunt face, the renzar thought he noticed, however, something familiar about it.
“Uh…excuse me?”
"Esteban, how is he?" asked the human again.
"Who are you?" Regt answered seriously, frowning.
“Oh, by all the gods, how stupid I've been. Excuse me. My head no longer works like it used to when I was younger…” The man said standing up.
“My name is Joseph…Joseph Melinao” he declared holding out his hand.
“What!.. But… So you are…”
“That's right sir Regthar. Esteban is my son,” added the passenger. The renzar stood undaunted, unable to move a muscle. Now he clearly remembered the hologram of the message Esteban received. It was the same face, although somewhat more deteriorated. The human, not receiving the return greeting, lowered his hand and sat back in the chair. A lot of sensations went through Regthar's head at that moment. He really needed a place to sit, but the furniture in that place still seemed too small.
“I know that my son has lived with you since he came to Chakona. I know because the Federation gave me that information. And believe me, I thank the gods for meeting you, Mr. Regthar, immediately upon arrival here. That has saved me some time…”
“One moment, Mr. Melinao. When Esteban received that message from you, he got very upset because of it. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to let that happen again. Esteban has suffered a lot, not only because of the miserable life you gave him, but also because of other unfortunate events that have occurred here in Chakona…” Regt said seriously.
"Oh I see. So he read the message. Since I didn't get an answer, I thought he hadn't received it."
"Oh yes, my son did have an answer for you, but he was too kind to send it back to you."
"Your son?" The human asked surprised.
“Grr… That's right! Esteban is now my son and he bears my last name”
“Okay, so you adopted him… What a surprise. That wasn't in the information the Federation gave me” Jospeh sighed. “Then, I ask you to please give me your address. I want to see him… I mean, I need to talk to him.”
Regthar was restless. He constantly thought about Esteban and how he would react when facing his human father, whom the boy blamed for all his traumas. After snorting for a moment, the renzar declared.
"Sorry. I already told you. Esteban doesn't want to hear from you. The pain you caused him did not…”
“Mr. Regthar! Don't judge me without knowing me!" Exclaimed the human standing up.
"Needless. What my son has said about you is enough and more than enough for me” Regt said with a fierce look. The human, noticing it, calmed down. And outlining a smile, I declare:
“I see… You… You must love him very much to react like that. Only a real dad would be like that. It's okay. Stay calm, please. I'm not here to hurt Esteban, I just…”
"Mr. Melinao. I don't care what you came for. If you really have feelings for Esteban, don't go near him. Don't interfere in his life. The boy has already suffered enough and tries to make a new life, here. With your permission." Regt declared forcefully, before leaving the inn. Joseph stood alone in the lobby, looking at the suitcase Regt had helped him out of the car. While, the renzar reached the transport and paused for a moment leaning against the door. He sighed deeply, then let out a small roar. After a moment, he boarded the vehicle and drove quietly back to the airport.
