Jess never smiles. Well, she just doesn't. Life is hard enough when you're a slave without people knowing you're a hybrid, too. It's much better if people just take her for a mouse. Still, every once in a while she'll let her guard down just a bit for someone she likes. You guys have made her feel so welcome here on FA that I thought it was time to let you see that she does have moods besides anger, cynicism and depression.
I may actually use this as an icon at some point. Jess isn't any sort of avatar character, like Niamh or Ciara. As much as I like her, she's too different from me to really do for that. But she does represent something of a turning point in my writing career. The New Girl at Silver Street was my second novel, and it was the first one I felt really satisfied with as a complete story. Jess started out as an experiment. I just wanted a character to throw into the nastiest situation I could think of to see what happened. But she may be the best character I've created to date.
Enough chatter. Enjoy the rare opportunity to see her smile, and guard your snacks closely. Those mousy instincts are just too hard to resist, sometimes!

She's much prettier when she smiles, I agree. I really like how my characters look in
strawberryneko's style, too. They always look a little bit younger, somehow, and more innocent.

Well, she is my character. A little bit of mischief is pretty much guaranteed, especially if she thinks she can get her greedy little hands on some fried cheese sticks. It's pandering to stereotype a bit, but she can't get enough of them.
...
I mean, no. No mischief here! She's an innocent little mousy!

Jessie does seem to be instantly recognizable, at least among her fans. I think she'd take that as a compliment! It is beautifully done, I agree.
strawberryneko did an amazing job with the shading and the details, and the best part was getting to watch her put this one together over the stream. It's always so interesting to watch artists work, and to see how they do things. I was really glad she was willing to include Jessie's glasses as well as her collar. A lot of artists either forget, or don't like to draw glasses, but they're as much a part of her look as the collar.
I do wish we could use more than one icon on this site. Even if we were limited to only two or three it would add a little bit of variety.
