While Lullaby apprentices as a Sandman, she encounters various beings like herself, with one foot in the waking world and one in the dream world. Like her, these beings live partially outside of time, with their garb, tastes, and sensibilities frozen in the time period in which they became young adults. Some of these beings are benign, some are sinister.
Two of these beings are Shudder, a freewheeling, mischievous tickle monster from the early 1970's, and Bump, a sullen, grungy Tasmanian devil-Boogeyman from the early 1990's. Spreading their own particular brands of chaos, the two become Lullaby's rivals and an obstacle in her mission to bring peace, rest and sweet dreams.
